Yesterday I won a prize online from the Michigan Lottery. The odds of winning were 1 in 24,286.05. I'm in the process of transferring it (and another $200) to my checking account. Nothing was withheld, and the transfer should be complete in a few business days. Since I'm beatin' the odds, today I listened to Beatin' the Odds, the third studio album by Molly Hatchet. It was released in 1980 and was the first album to feature singer Jimmy Farrar, who replaced original singer Danny Joe Brown. Who can forget the previous album, Flirtin' with Disaster, released a year prior? I'm listening to it now.

Always liked their cover art.

Their fifth studio album, No Guts...No Glory, 1983, was the only one out 13 that didn't have a heroic fantasy painting by Frank Frazetta or Boris Vallejo, etc. That album cover looked a lot like this 1982 picture of the band. Wikipedia says that Molly Hatchet took its name from a prostitute who allegedly mutilated and decapitated her clients. Southern Rock Masters and Regrinding the Axes were cover albums they did that I never heard of until I read it Wednesday. I'm going t see if they're on YouTube.

Yep. They're there. All 29 songs. If you click Watch on YouTube it takes you right to the playlists.

I may have posted this sometime in the last couple of years. I planned on it, but don't think I did. Dexter Holland, musician, singer, songwriter,  and businessman, best known as the co-founder, lead vocalist, rhythm guitarist, main songwriter and composer, and only constant member of the rock band the Offspring, is also the co-founder and former owner of the record label Nitro Records, and the creator of the hot sauce Gringo Bandito. Asif that wasn't enough to keep him busy, Dr. Bryan Keith "Dexter" Holland holds a PhD in molecular biology. In a 1995 interview, Holland said that he would rather be a professor at a university than play music by the time he turns 40. He's 58 now.

He was a doctoral student at the Laboratory of Viral Oncology and Proteomics Research, Keck School of Medicine, where he was supervised by Professor Suraiya Rasheed. In March 2013, Holland and co-authors published a paper in PLoS One regarding microRNA in HIV genomes, titled "Identification of Human MicroRNA-Like Sequences Embedded within the Protein-Encoding Genes of the Human Immunodeficiency Virus". The original academic paper describes the use of computational molecular biological (in silico) approaches to identify microRNA-like sequences in HIV. These sequences are suggested to have evolved to self-regulate survival of the virus in the host by evading its immune responses and thus influence the persistence, replication, and pathogenicity of HIV. Holland was awarded his Ph.D. in molecular biology during the USC Commencement on May 12, 2017. Not bad for a guy who started his career as a punk rocker in 1984.

Several times this week I've had these 2 lines It's been so long, you're welcome back my friends   To the show that never ends running around in my head. But I thought it was since welcome back my friends. It's from a song called The Score by Emerson, Lake & Powell, not Emerson, Lake & Palmer. Exceptional English rock drummer Cozy Powell sat in for English rock drummer extraordinaire Carl Palmer who was playing in the band Asia at the time. Emerson, Lake & Powell is the only studio album by Emerson, Lake & Powell, released in 1986.

Karn Evil 9 1st Impression, Pt. 2 by Emerson, Lake & Palmer starts out Welcome back, my friends   To the show that never ends    We're so glad you could attend!   Come inside! Come inside! on side 2 of Brain Salad Surgery which came out in 1973. Karn Evil 9 1st Impression, Pt. 1 is the last song on side 1. Parts 1 and 2 are followed by 2nd Impression and 3rd Impression to finish the album of 8 songs. It's been so long. Yep, 12 years between those 2 albums.

Brain Salad Surgery was the name of a song on Works Volume 2 by  Emerson, Lake & Palmer that came out in 1977, 4 years after the album Brain Salad Surgery. And to add to the strangeness, the song Right Place, Wrong Time was the first song on Dr. John's album In the Right Place, which came out in 1973, the same year as the Brain Salad Surgery album. It has the lines Just need a little brain salad surgery (oooh)   Got to cure this insecurity. Hmm, what does it all mean?

And there was a live album by Emerson, Lake & Palmer in 1974 called Welcome Back My Friends to the Show That Never Ends – Ladies and Gentlemen. Karn Evil 9" 1st Impression was side 5 of the triple album, and parts 2 and 3 were side 6.

Can't go wrong with Doctor John.

Or Allen Toussaint.

When I saw the title From a Whisper to a Scream it reminded me of this song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ImJpqutxOmg

From a Whisper to a Scream was also the name of a 1987 horror movie.

I can't watch a Joe Cocker video without thinking of John Belushi, every time.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmjWO7oY8LU

Joe "The Rocker" Cocker was a good sport about it and they sang a song together.

The second half of the lyrics of Karn Evil 9, Third Impression have him talking to the ship's computer. This whole song is the basis of an upcoming science fiction movie.

https://www.denofgeek.com/culture/jumanji-producers-adapting-elps-karn-evil-9-into-sci-fi-film/

I found out that the part of Karn Evil 9 2nd Impression that sounds like steel drums isn't Carl Palmer, who was using some electronic drums at the time. It was Keith Emerson playing a Mini Moog synthesizer with one hand while playing other stuff with the other hand. He was really good at playing 2 or more keyboards together in a single song.

Karn Evil 9: First Impression

Part 1:

Cold and misty morning, I heard a warning borne in the air
About an age of power where no one had an hour to spare,
Where the seeds have withered, silent children shivered, in the cold
Now their faces captured in the lenses of the jackals for gold.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.

Suffering in silence, they've all been betrayed.
They hurt them and they beat them, in a terrible way,
Praying for survival at the end of the day.
There is no compassion for those who stay.
I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there.

There must be someone who can set them free:
To take their sorrow from this odyssey
To help the helpless and the refugee
To protect what's left of humanity.
Can't you see
Can't you see
Can't you see.

I'll be there
I'll be there
I will be there;
To heal their sorrow
To beg and borrow
Fight tomorrow.

Step inside! Hello! We've the most amazing show
You'll enjoy it all we know
Step inside! Step Inside!

We've got thrills and shocks, supersonic fighting cocks.
Leave your hammers at the box
Come Inside! Come Inside!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Left behind the bars, rows of Bishops' heads in jars
and a bomb inside a car
Spectacular! Spectacular!

If you follow me there's a speciailty
some tears for you to see
Misery, misery,
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Next upon the bill in our House of Vaudeville
We've a stripper in a till
What a thrill! What a thrill!
And not content with that, with our hands behind our backs,
We pull Jesus from a hat,
Get into that! Get into that!
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Part 2

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends
We're so glad you could attend
Come inside! Come inside!
There behind a glass is a real blade of grass
be careful as you pass.
Move along! Move along!

Come inside, the show's about to start
guaranteed to blow your head apart
Rest assured you'll get your money's worth
The greatest show in Heaven, Hell or Earth.
You've got to see the show, it's a dynamo.
You've got to see the show, it's rock and roll ....

Right before your eyes we pull laughter from the skies
And he laughs until he cries then he dies then he dies
Come inside the shows about to start
Guaranteed to blow your head apart

You gotta see the show
It's a dynamo
You gotta see the show
It's rock and roll

Soon the Gypsy Queen in a glaze of Vaseline
Will perform on guillotine
What a scene! What a scene!
Next upon the stand will you please extend a hand
to Alexander's Ragtime Band
Roll up! Roll up! Roll up!
See the show!

Performing on a stool we've a sight to make you drool
Seven virgins and a mule
Keep it cool. Keep it cool.
We would like it to be known the exhibits that were shown
were exclusively our own,
All our own. All our own.
Come and see the show! Come and see the show! Come and see the show!
See the show!

Karn Evil 9: Second Impression

No lyrics.

Karn Evil 9: Third Impression

Man alone; born of stone;
Will stamp the dust of time
His hands strike the flame of his soul;
Ties a rope to a tree and hangs the Universe
Until the winds of laughter blows cold.

Fear that rattles in men's ears
And rears it's hideous head
Dread .... Death .... in the wind ....

Man of steel pray and kneel
With fever's blazing torch
Thrust in the face of the night;
Draws a blade of compassion
Kissed by countless Kings
Whose jewelled trumpet words blind his sight.

Walls that no man thought would fall
The altars of the just
Crushed .... Dust .... in the wind ....

No man yields who flies in my ship
DANGER!
Let the bridge computer speak
STRANGER!
LOAD YOUR PROGRAM. I AM YOURSELF.

No computer stands in my way
Only blood can cancel my pain
Guardians of a new clear dawn
Let the maps of war be drawn.

Rejoice! Glory is ours!
Our young men have not died in vain,
Their graves need no flowers
The tapes have recorded their names.

I am all there is
NEGATIVE! PRIMITIVE! LIMITED! I LET YOU LIVE!
But I gave you life
WHAT ELSE COULD YOU DO?
To do what was right
I'M PERFECT! ARE YOU?
