On listening to your current podcast I heard you say that cars don't backfire. You've said this many times before and I've meant to respond to that but today I got ambitious enough to do that. I live a half block from a major university and for the last couple years I've seen students modify their cars/motorcycles to backfire on demand. They routinely run up the streets near the frat houses and grad students' housing repeatedly making their vehicles backfire. It has greatly desensitized me to such noise. Imagine that - desensitized next to a major soft target! I don't let that effect my awareness when away from my neighborhood, but I have to be careful not to overreact when home. Yes I carry everywhere and yes I'm well trained (military and LEO) but I really have to carefully analyze noises when home.
