Ear plugs are a good idea, it's not the guns that will deafen you, it's the frags. flashbangs are even WORSE than grenades for hearing damage.

I don't have the ear muffs and plugs in for an incident...not that smart...I include them in case I get a chance to shoot with the guys.  Now I'll keep them for an incident too.
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

The first thing I would do is try NOT to be within 50 miles of a mega-city like New York. They're more prone to crime in general and to terrorist attacks than places like Albany, for example. If the terrorists always attack someplace you're not at there's a lot less to worry about. For the same reason I wouldn't vacation in a place like Somalia even if there was no war going on at the time. You know there are places to avoid because there will trouble sooner or later. Avoid likely conflict areas so your life isn't in danger in the first place.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Would that include Miami, New Orleans or New York?  ;)

Everyone would like to say stay the heck out of NYC. But Oklahoma City is 31st in population and in the heartland. I wouldn't have expected a couple of tons of fertilizer bomb to go off there.

Terrorists have a free hand in choosing where they go. In fact most analysts recognize that NYC is probably the best prepared for handling such a situation. A smart organization would change its behavior to keep us off  guard. I am quite leary of downtown areas in mid America. They could easily come in and quickly overwhelm a city like Austin or Omaha. It would take hours at best for regional resources to respond. Enough time for lots of  folks to die.

Coming from someone who just spent the holiday weekend in KC, in a high rise hotel, I am all too aware of what you are saying. Explaining to the wife why I was packing had her looking at me like I was a loon. No matter how many examples I provide, the "It can't happen here." mindset still pervades the U.S. Yes I know remember OKC, 9/11, all the other that could have happened in not for our dedicated men and women in the various services. It still amazes me how some think, or don't as the case may be. I still say that we need to be prepared, like Israel, for a constant fight with no front lines. I've been saying that since the morning of 9/11/2001. And no, I don't think we need the military in our streets.

I'm a member of Front Sight...
 Got this today..

What makes a terrorist choose one target over another
when planning to machine gun and grenade attack
innocent people in a crowded public place?

Is the target selection based on some perceived
geopolitical transgressions against the terrorists'
demented cause?  The terrorist would like the world to
think so, but if that was the case, why didn't the
latest attack happen in a place like Israel?  Why
Mumbai, India?

Here is a letter I received from someone who knows the
real reason why terrorists would strike Mumbai, India
over Tel Aviv, Israel or even Houston, Texas.

You won't see this talked about on the evening news...

Have you ever attended a course at Front Sight? I would love to but haven't as yet, if ever. Just curious what you thought if you have.

I hope we are never able to write a letter like that and saying that the US population has been disarmed.  It is a frightening letter.
