A couple in New Zealand have had their choice of baby name vetoed by authorities after they attempted to name their baby "4real".

Pat and Sheena Wheaton were informed by New Zealand's Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages that their choice had been rejected, because numerals were not allowed on birth certificates.

"For most of us, when we try to figure out what our names mean, we have to look it up in a babies book and there's no direct link between the meaning and the name" said Ms. Wheaton in an interview with TV One.

The Registry has begun negotiating with the couple under a rule that states that unusual names can be given consideration on a case-by-case basis. "The name has not at this stage been rejected. We are currently in discussions with the parents to clarify the situation" said Registrar-General Brian Clarke in a statement.

The baby will be named "Real" if no compromise is met.
