I pulled security for a Latino Night at a rural firehouse  last winter in the middle of a single-digits snowstorm.  Long story short, I had floor and needed to have a word with two brothers - one feeling no pain, the other getting close - who were arguing and looking to come to blows over nothing about two hours before closing.

Driving home with my partner (retired NYC PO), we saw familiar clothing sitting on top of 6" of snow in the middle of the road and on the shoulder - one article about every 50 feet or so. We come around a bend to the brothers, half nekkid wrestling and tossing wild blows in the road with the car in a snowbank,  driver yelling out the window.

"Ya know", says my partner as he slows coming up to the spectacle, "once I rolled up on these two Latinos guys fighting near Lefrak (City Apartments). One guy had a knife sticking out his chest. Called the bus, and started to cuff the other guy. Guy with the knife in his chest tells me not to arrest his brother, he didn't mean it. They're funny that way."

"These must be his kids", I said as we drove on...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.

Funny, that's what he said too.

Their new motto should be Philladelphia - at least it's not Detroit.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

Law abiders have the legal ability to return fire in Philitroit. Probably the only reason it's not leading Detroit in crime stats.

What do you expect from a place where they booed Santa Claus and threw snowballs at him 40 years ago? Where's your holiday spirit Philly? http://www.snopes.com/holidays/christmas/santa/philadelphia.asp
