Making guns DIY

Apparently it is perfectly OK to build your own firearms as long as they are for personal use, not sale and are not otherwise restricted (no machine guns, sbr's etc)  another forum had a thread about it where some one posted a quote from ATF that said basically that , they also posted 2 links. The first one is below, but the other is in England and contains some outrageous experiences by the Gentle who runs it so I will post that one in politics. Enjoy, if any of you try these projects PLEASE post pics ;D

Very interesting info, Tom.
I will have to look into this. It is not inexpensive, but to the do-it-yourself crowd it would be something to brag about when completed.

I wonder what would need to be done, if anything, about a serial number?

On my way out the door at this moment, so I don't have time to look it up. However, there is (was?) a manufacturer in Idaho (?) who made just inside legal 1911 blanks. All you had to do was drill and tap some holes, clean it up, and add various fiddly parts (is a barrel considered a fiddly part?) and - voila - you have a custom 1911, made by you.

He got raided by the Feds (of course), never did hear about the case after that. Probably another case of the Feds raiding and then ignoring the case to shut the guy down.

Red something as I recall, will update later if no one else gets here first.

UPDATE: Sorry, took me a while to find it. I was thinking of Red's Tradiing Post which was shut down 2 years ago by the swell guys at the BATFE. Wrong company. The DIY gun place is KT Ordnance in Dillon, MT. They make 60% kits that you finish carving, drilling, tapping, etc. Price is $300 for the 60% raw frame alone. Looks like an interesting project for those so inclined. They did have their run-in with the swell folks at the BATFE as well, used to advertise their work as 80% guns, but apparently the BATFE had them scale it back even more.

My understanding is that as long as it is not for sale, you do not even need a serial number. Some one planning to do this would be wise to check with ATF or a lawyer to be safe though.
If you already have a home machine shop, the only expenses would be material and tooling ( you can spend $40+ on one end mill depending on what you get) .
One thing I did not notice covered is that you would still need to purchase a barrel, even if you made all the other parts yourself as rifling a barrel requires special machinery that is not commonly found in the home shop. You could pick one caliber that you wanted to build several types of arms for and buy a length of rifled barrel from some one like Green mountain then cut off the lengths you needed for each project. ( for example a bolt action  a double rifle and an AR 10, all in .308).

Just don't build a semi auto that fires from an open bolt, or a semi auto gun that is electronicly fired.

Both of those items are Machine guns as far as the ATF is concerned.
