The Carroll National Guard unit will train on urban military operations by holding a four-day exercise at Arcadia.
The purpose of the April 2-5 drill will be to gather intelligence, then search for and apprehend a suspected weapons dealer, according to Sgt. Mike Kots, readiness NCO for Alpha Company.

Citizens, law enforcement, media and other supporters will participate.

Troops will spend Thursday, April 2, staging at a forward operations base at Carroll. The next day company leaders will conduct reconnaissance and begin patrolling the streets of Arcadia to identify possible locations of the weapons dealer.

The primary phase will be done Saturday, April 4, when convoys will be deployed from Carroll to Arcadia. Pictures of the arms dealer will be shown in Arcadia, and soldiers will go door to door asking if residents have seen the suspect.

Ok so feel free to correct me, since I have no military experience and well I am one of the youngest ones on here.  If this reallly is training for urban warfare in Iraq and Afganistan wouldn't the Iowa National Gaurd be better off training in an area where they could actually train using lethal force.  Because I would think that in the Middle East they are not going to able to just go door to door, asking politely for the head of the household to lead them around the place and show them the family portraits.  I wish I knew how many more Amendments need to be disregarded before the general public gets the idea that these sort of these actions are not suppose to be happening. I think there are some member on here from Iowa, anyone near the Arcadia area?

Actually that's EXACTLY how they act, it was found that kicking in doors etc. pissed off the locals and helped recruit for the BG's.  The Point that the Commanders are trying to make to the Iraqi people is that they are PROTECTING them from Al Queda  (attacking Shiites to start Belfast style sectarian war ) and Shiite death squads (seeking revenge for same and "ethnically cleansing" neighborhoods ) The "friendlier" methods are part of how we have turned the situation around.
1) It actually IS a valid training tool, since part of the reason for CONGRESSIONALLY MANDATED down time between deployments is for training. Training in theater would either increase the lengths of deployments for the Units to be relieved or would leave areas uncovered during change overs.
2) The article made it clear, but no one bothered to notice that participants were VOLUNTEERS,
3) It has been canceled.

Read "The Strongest Tribe" by Bing West, It gives a pretty good history of the conflict from the time Saddam was overthrown till '08. I found it very informative and it points out how the actions of the self serving Dems like Murtha, aided our enemies. Bush does not come off to well either for not taking a more direct and decisive hand in things.
