I thought that the .308 was meant to replace the 30-06 as a battle rifle round.  From what I understand, ballisticaly they're very close.  The .308 NATO was made to be used in semi and full auto weapons and there fore given a shorter case to help cycling in automatic actions.  So its the modern battle rifle round and 30-06 is you bolt action battle rifle round of yesteryear.

In military configuration the 30/06 and .308 are indentical, 147 grn or 150 grn at 2700 fps, even though the 06 has more potential.

Another big reason why .308 replaced 30-06 was because it weighed less so they could carry more ammo on their person.

The poll should be re-done so the only choices are assault rifles and no main battle rifles. They can be in a poll of their own. Less than half of the votes so far are even for assault rifles. And the G36 is on there twice.

I am sorry about the mistake I have been gone and while I was gone I asked a friend of mine to put up this poll while I wasn't there and he put it up wrong, he barely knows anything about guns and it was supposed to have modern day and older assault rifles and I apologize for the mistake I didn't know he made this much of a mistake and apologize for my friend's error.

I've always thought that assault rifle was a select fire rifle chambered in a round smaller than 7.62 nato.  Thats your 5.56, 7.62 soviet, and 5.45.  Your battle rifle was any thing select fire or semi in 7.62 nato and up, 30-06 7.62x54.  And your assault guns are those bullpup things.  But if you want to throw bullpups in with assault rifle than I guess it's just personal preference, oh and we can't be friends :'(.  So from what I figure we got alot of guns on here that aren't assault rifles.  So either the guns aren't right or the title isn't right.

Close. Assault rifles are select fire but in a rifle caliber and cartridge. So Thompsons, Brens, "Grease" guns and the like are not, as they are in pistol calibers.

And for those not happy with FALs on the list, please do recall that the FN-FAL was called the right arm of freedom for a reason. And yes, even in 7.62 NATO were select fire. That's why I voted for the FAL - none of the others have yet come close, although the AK and AR are breathing down its nec for ubiquitousness and longevity.

Whew, 2 big words. I'm done.
