UPDATE:CCW Setting off alarms in stores???
« on: March 14, 2009, 03:30:31 PM »
About 4 months ago this has started happening to me. Around X-mass time. About one out of three stores I walk into or out off I set off the Security alarms. Does this happen to anyone else? I dont like it cause it draws attention to me. I have searched my Holster and everything I carry a thousand times to see if there is something, maybe a tag or something that is causing this and I cant find anything.

I was thinking it was maybe a certain kind cause it doesnt happen at every store that has those things by the doors.

Any idea how to stop this????

We had this problem when one of our daughters would wear certain items from Old Navy. We couldn't go into a Target, without her setting the alarms off. It turned out that the clothing companies had begun sewing the security tags into the clothing and the buyer is supposed to cut them out. They look like little, square, cloth tags and are sometimes labeled wit instructions to cut them out. Maybe this is old new, but still easily overlooked.

Hey Ksail, Unless there is some "secret" security tag in your GQ fashion ;), does it happen with coats or jackets? Old clothes or the newer stuff?

Could be those secret gov't microchips to track us. OR the aliens are preparing a return to Earth and the "marked" individuals will be recruited for their bidding. ::)

I'm getting more foil right now,... :P ;D

Hope your well Ksail,

RFID?   ???

I got a Maxpedition Jumbo CCW Carry bag that I have checked re-checked and checked again for a sec tag but none to be found. I guess next time I go into a store that it goes off in I will ask to use their de-magnatizer.

Also I thought for a while it was the Hornady Taps I was using cause it started happening as soon as I started carrying those in my glock. I carry one mag in the gun and two spares so my round count 40. Two mags of 13 and one 13 plus one in the chamber in case you all were wondering how I get to 40.

I have a friend in loss prevention.  His explanation on how a lot of those alarms work is that there is an
antenna (just a coil of wire) that will set the alarms off when passed between the two towers.
He said something as simple as a paper clip in someones purse can fool the system into going off.
Look for something like that or maybe even your compressed mag springs are doing it.

Had the same thing happen to me. Bought a Columbia 3-in-1 parka at Kohl's...kept tripping the security do-dads at Target. Finally, the SG at target asked if I'd bought anything from Old Navy. I explained I had just bought a new coat from Kohl's and they told me what to look for and sure enough. It was sewn into the outter shell and I didn't find it until I removed the inner liner.

Oh, you have one of those "SPECIAL" Glocks.....

They are under recall right now, and you should not carry it until it has had the "upgrade". Go out and immediately get yourself a cardboard box and mail it to me ASAP........ You might not ever get it back, but I will send you a free Glock hat for your trouble.

I work for a company that has those alarms at the doors.  They work like Junkie and bryand said. RFID is Radio Frequency Identification.

The tags are armed by default and need to be de-armed by a device at the checkout, usually a unit under the scanner or by removing the RFID tag altogher.

Like Junkie said a coil of metal can imitate the RFID tag and set off the alarm.

It could be that the checkout clerk never deactivated the tag.......   or?

Could it be a RECOIL spring setting things off?
