Savage Mark II with accu trigger question
« on: March 14, 2009, 10:47:08 PM »
I went to a local gun show today and I found a savage MarkII .22 LR with a bull barrel for 329.00. I have been looking for a magazine fed heavy barrel .22 bolt action for the monthly .22 matches I attend and the price is right on this one. It had a nice laminated stock and the only thing I didn't like was the plastic trigger guard. I could only find one review online but it said it was extremly accurate. I was wondering if anyone here has any experience with one of these rifles. I also like the Ruger 77/22 with the bull barrel but it is twice the price. Also if I do end up buying the savage does anyone know were I can find 10 round magazines for it.Thanks.

It's supposed to shoot as good or better than anything else on the market, and the accu trigger is supposed to be THE BEST factory trigger bar NONE.
Have not shot one myself but I have heard several very impressive reports, and seen VERY favorible write ups in American Rifleman and Shooting times.
A couple others on here also love them and will comment when they see your post.

I have two Savages, one in 22-250 and one in 17HMR.  They are both tack drivers.  I like the accu trigger on the 17, and wish I had one on the other.  You hear a lot about the "Savage being the most bang for the buck."  Not only from what I read, but from experience Savage does not need any extra consideration based on price - They are just flat out great shooters and worth more than what they bring!

Buy it, I'd be more than shocked if you were disappointed.

What he said.  I have a Savage 30-03 with the accutrigger and it is phenomenal.  Even I regularly out shoot guys with Remmys, Weatherbys etc.  Price don't mean crap, Savage is ACCURATE!

Check out www.gunblast.com. They do reviews of a lot of weapons and seem to be reasonably honest (by gun writer standards). The only downside is that the videos suck. (Thirty second clip of good old boy shooting gun and saying, Cool!). Aside from that, they give great info on groupings, bullet weight, loads etc. The guy has done some testing of the Savage with the accutrigger  and likes them. The pictures of the targets and load data are convincing. If I weren't a lefty I would own a Savage in .308. Seems like twice the gun for half the cash of a lot of competetors, and hell, they're old as dirt. They've got to be doing something right.

I have the MK II Classic (longer, non-bull barrel) with thumbhole stock and accutrigger.  I haven't put enough rounds down range to really give a report.  From my limited shooting (~50 rounds) it is very nice and seems to shoot well.  I need to spend some serious time though with it on the 50 yrd range.   I had intended on getting the bull barrel, but this became available first and it goes so well with my model 25.    I'll have pictures and targets later this spring.

If it's NIB, and you want a good bolt action .22, then I'd recommend grabbing it.

They can be one-hole wonders.  My son has a 17HMR (don't remember if it is a 93 or an MII), it is a WONDERFUL little gun, has that funky Boyd's stock like M'ette's 10-22's but in a manly gray.

After a few COLD days out in the hunting blind, I have come to like the plastic trigger guards.  They work and don't freeze to your hand like a good old fashioned metal heatsink.
"Why are you carrying a pistol?  Expecting trouble?"

"No Maam.  If I was expecting trouble, I'd have a rifle."
