Another option you may want to take a look at is Heckler & Koch's P30 or P2000.....albeit more expensive, they are very nice in 9mm.
Winchester Ranger T .45ACP 230 gr.+P JHP.................................When you care enough to send the very best.

I needed an idiot-proof sidearm for work ( I take little solace that I apparently must work with some idiots  ;D) and I narrowed it to the XD 45 and the Glock.  XD won because it felt more natural in my hand and pointed much more instinctively for me.  I went through a couple of thousand rounds before my required firearms course, and then over 500 rounds during that.  No hiccups and it's an accurate pistol.

I got the opportunity to handle a XD M 9mm, and I was amazed that it felt even better than the XD.  I mentioned it to a Glock guy at work, and he tried one out at a local range. He's impressed enough to buy one, and is scrounging the money as I type.

Both the Glock and the Springfield are excellent choices - try them both out, see what fits you best and what you shoot best.
Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.

I do like the M&P too, but there are still trade-offs. Smiths don't have the chamber loaded indicator and the striker indicator, but they do have a super-evil magazine disconnect. If something goes wrong with the two aforementioned XD parts, the gun will probably still work when the SHTF. With the Smith, if something goes wrong with the magazine, you're left with a paper weight. If you lose your magazine, or your magazine becomes inoperable for whatever reason, you should be able to fire at least the last round in the gun, or use it as a single-shot breach loader.
Not all M&Ps have the mag safety. My M&P 9mm will fire w/o the mag inserted just have to oder the right SKU # from your dealer.
There is room for all of God's creatures ....., That would be on my plate right next to the taters and gravy.

I've had my XDm9 since Nov and enjoy it. I was looking for the .40 version but couldn't find one in my area until I picked up my 9mm. My dad and I find it shoots better than his .40 Glock. The only problem I have is the 19 rounds in the mag. I'm not used to having that many to eat through without needing another clip. Oh, something to think about it picking up an UpLULA http://maglula.tripod.com/uplula.htm. It's so much better than the little loader they package with the gun.

The XD is a fine gun, but i do prefer GLOCK. I do own 2 XD's myself and have no complaints. My 5 inch tac and 4 inch service model are nice and I feel a great buy for someone buying a first gun. They come with 2 mags a loader and mag pouch and a nice case to boot.

You don't have to pull the trigger on the XDm to take it apart... you do on the glock.

yeah, yeah I know, you always unload your gun 1st... it will never happen to you...

The only safety you need is between your ears...

Well guess what, its also the most likly fail.

We all do dry fire practice too. If your following all of the other basic handgun safety rules, having to pull the trigger won't ever be an issue.

Unfortuanately, not in Commiefornia. Unless it is an existing model that has been grandfathered in from before our CA Certified Safe Handgun list, the gun has to have a magazine safety. That's why we don't get Keltecs and LCP's. :'(

That's too bad.

My M+P has the lovely engraved disclaimer right on the frame:

"Capable of being fired without magazine".

Posts about grip and feel are very valid and varied. Personal preference, shooters level of familiarity, etc,...

A partner of mine won't get a pistol without all the safeties, decockers, mag safety, etc,...

He's new to shooting, and is humble and smart enough to acknowledge his comfort level, (nice guy, just not a cocked and locked, or trigger safety kinda guy),....

Practice, practice, practice.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
