" The solution to piracy is the same in the 21st century as it was in the 19th century.  Sink their ships without warning, destroy their bases of operation, and never negotiate except to accept their unconditional surrender
And then hang them.

Everything has a cost-benefit threshold; when pirates don’t make money and start dying in large numbers, fewer people will want to become pirates.

I’d offer one more solution as a parallel, suggested by a Hot Air reader earlier this week.  The US Navy should buy or lease some smaller container ships as decoys and sail them through the Gulf of Aden, only with fully-armed commandos on board.  When pirates start discovering that some American-flagged ships are fakes bristling with death, they’ll think twice about approaching any other American-flagged ship again."

They were used by and against Germany in both World wars, Germany called them "Commerce Raiders", they would aproach merchant ships under a false, usually neutral, flag, then when close false sides would drop away revealing the armament, the crew would be removed and the ship either seized and sent back to Germany or looted and sunk.
The Allies used a similar technique, when the German ship approached an apparent allied merchant ship, weaponry would appear and hammer the attacker at close range. These were called "Q ships".

"  Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton said Wednesday the Obama administration will take the unusual step of trying to seize pirate financial assets and property, as it works with shippers to thwart hijackers off the coast of Somalia.

The measures outlined by Clinton, part of a new U.S. diplomatic initiative to thwart sea piracy, are largely stopgap and symbolic moves while officials weigh more comprehensive diplomatic and military action."

Ship control, not Pirate control, there are just to many of the deadly assault ships on our waterways, after all, it's for the children. ::)

I bet those assault ships are black in color and can be easily modified to run full auto too. ;D

I have an idea - don't send any ships to Somalia. When they starve to death without our food the problem is solved. We should embargo any country that has pirates.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. Letter to Alexander Hamilton, Friday, May 02, 1783

Dammit, Jumbo......that makes entirely too much common sense to even be remotely considered.

Move along to the next idea, please....nothing else to see here.......move along.....  ;)

I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison

Put a sniper with a .50 caliber Barrett on each US ship.  Unknown boat gets too close, punch some 1/2" holes in the boat's motor.  You can give them a warning before firing if you want, but I wouldn't.

Okay, lets freeze their "bank accounts" and cut up their VISAs, Mastercards, AmExs.  That'll show 'em! ::)

The idea behind this, is that they've got foreign investors behind them for weapons elecronics etc. These guys could be hurt. If its just the local bangers forget it. Plus they're smart enough to spread the wealth around in these fishing villages where a 25% "tax" of a 2 million haul will buy you lot of protection, but still wind up in peoples mattreses. Bank seizures, not much good.

I have an odd sense of humor and evidently sarcasm isn't always so obvious when the medium is the written word.  I just saw an opportunity to be a smart aleck and couldn't resist.  Not that I ever really try.

Just the threat of that and maybe a week or two of actually doing it would probably be enough to have an angry mob take care of the problem for us.
