Does anyone hear that giant inflating sound?
« on: April 19, 2009, 12:28:50 AM »
I saw on Gunbroker that WWB in .45 ACP is currently bid to $300 for 500 rounds; and they had 20 bids! Here's the link to the auction:
http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.asp?Item=127117557#PIC

I wrote in another post, that the ammo shortage is following the typical path of recent asset pricing bubbles. I am not going to use one auction to prove my point, but I saw some other curious developments on that site that leads me to think this might be happening. I will continue to watch and see. I also checked Craigslist in a few metropolitan areas and I saw some ads on ammo for sale; a similar pattern....

If this plays out like the dot-com and real estate bubbles, we should be seeing much lower prices on ammo and guns in a couple of years; all political forces being the same as they are today.

More than a few shop owners and FFLs have told me supply should be increasing shortly (months), and prices dropping.
Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.

I remember in 2006 buying a case of Magtech .45 ACP (230 gr FMJ) for $210, or $10.50 per box. It seemed at the time that ammo was plenty and cheap. Within the last five years, does anyone remember the price of .45 ACP (target rounds) per box? Use WWB or some other mainstream brand. I'm trying to establish a baseline for the "normal" price of ammo- when the theoretical supply and demand curves intersect at their peaks.

Thanks!

18 months ago I was paying just under $17/ 50 for Fiocchi .45 ACP and the same for their .357 Magnum.

45 ACP does seem to be the most expensive around here..if you can find it, 9mm ball is in the 9-12 dollar range per 50

I was paying 32 bucks/100 for WWB .45 ACP and 23 bucks for 9mm in June of last year.  That was my local guy.  Walmart was two bucks cheaper.

Now it's at 43 and 34 bucks respectively and Wally hasn't had no inventory in 10 weeks.

Stupid statement of the week.....I'm at Bass Pro about an hour ago and overhear the "gun salesman" telling a customer that the reason they can't use a .357 magnum cartridge in an auto loading pistol is because the recoil was too great and the automatics aren't strong enough to handle it........No joke.....

P.S.  They had NO handgun ammo other than the Winchester stuff made exclusively for Bass Pro...NOTHING!!!

I was in Scheels the other day - regional big box store in Wi to MT including both Dakotas - and they are quite well loaded with ammo in all shapes and sizes. They had cases of the PMC 5.56 a couple weeks ago (I picked up a few boxes) and when I got the Fobus holster for the Para, I also picked up 5 boxes of 12ga sabot slug rounds for $5 a box. Pistol ammo is in short supply, but they had some. Also had Hornady 5.56 and 7.63 bullets (boxes of 500) on the shelf. They must have a very good relationship with their distributor.

The local Sportsman's Warehouse has next to nothing on the shelf - as much a problem caused by their buy-out by the Canadians as demand I think. Their pistol wall is at least half-empty due to the buy-out and waiting for the new distributor to pony up some inventory.

Gander seems to be doing OK, lots of expensive stuff - they have Wolf military 7.62x39 at $12 I think. I bought some at a gun show a month or so ago in Grand Forks for $5.75. I keep forgetting to ask about primers.

The Outdoorsman - the local mom&pop where I got the Para - never did have lots of ammo, but do have lots of shotgun rounds as well as assorted rifle and pistol too, just not a large quantity.

BTW, back to Scheel's - they have Winchester copper coated .22 HP on sale - box of 333 rounds for $9. I will be stopping buy tomorrow . . . And demonpi - you listening? What with that new tacticool .22 you won, you should be getting a case of that stuff at that price.
