Casting lead
« on: April 20, 2009, 12:03:40 AM »
I have mentioned before here about having bought casting supplies, but just sitting on them until the time seemed right, one of my friends has been asking about casting ingots, as he inherited a bunch of wheel weights, so I dug up 1 furnace and some ingot molds and took them to my shop, He was busy taking a shooting class with Andy Stamford, so I just started the old furnace up and cast ingots alone, I cast 63 ingots, and got more raw material from the garage when I got home, and discovered bags full of cast bullets ( unsized or lubed ) for what looks like 185grn, .45, single groove round nose and 400grn what appear to be .45/70 bullets. Bullet casting comes next, and would welcome any input.

Keep the casting room well ventilated!  Clean the molds well.  Don't let the amount in the pot get too low.  Don't let the moulds get too hot.  Experiment a little...moulds are different.

Have fun,

Richard

PS:  Never look a gift horse in the mouth!  With the cost of components going up, if it's free it's good (usually)!

The Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook is tops.
