Rastus and Tom both make good points about mounting. I've doe it myself, and I've paid a good smith $50 to do it for me. For a high dollar piece of glass on a go to rifle, I would drop the extra fifty. The bore sighting alone can worth $10 in saved ammo costs.

For the size targets and distances your mentioning + hunting, I'm real fond of my Leupold 3.5X10 MK4 - M3 illuminated, I have the mil-dot, but for what your doing it would not be necessary, and you really would not need the M3 version, an M1 would work with a duplex reticle. You can get basically the same set up in the lower cost LRT model, not milspec. see riflescopes.com for a close up look at all of them.

Here's a pic of mine, not real good, but it is not an overly large scope.
