I would hope they would do something new. Granted, I'm not a 1911 guy, but seriousely how many do need? Everybody and his dog is making one in everything from compact to polymer. It would be nice if a company with the resources of Ruger would spend some of those to, you know, innovate. Hell, I'd settle for an LCP in 9mm or .40.

Although I don't think you could ever have too many 1911's, I agree on the part about innovation.
However, innovation in pistol design (and I mean
TRUE innovation, as in no one has thought of it and built it yet) will be slow going I'm afraid. Most of the 'new' stuff we will see will be aimed at ergonomics, weight savings, and new cartridge design, but not anything that is totally '
out there' new.
Almost every new design out there now has
some unique feature but was partly borrowed from a previous concept.
We already have and use polymer, rubber, plastic, steel, carbon fiber, stainless steel, aluminum, titanium, scandium and every other "fruit-of-the-loomium" bouncing around in gun designs now. It'll be hard to come up with something 'completely' new and improved.
I think the next evolution will be in recoil design to allow something like an all-polymer gun (slide and frame) for a cartridge like the .45 ACP and still only weigh a pound or so. Imagine a 1911 Officers Model that weighs less than a pound but has no recoil.
It may be twenty years in the future (or more) but it may eventually happen.
Of course, I may just be farting in a whirlwind....but that the way i see it.
