EOtech Magnifier worth the cost?
« on: May 14, 2009, 11:21:24 PM »
Is it worth the $350-$450 it costs as a replacement for a 3x scope? I have the optic and want to give my AR a little more reach. Does any one have experience with one to say if it stacks up against an Aimpoint or ACOG for reliability at 150 - 300 yds?

Just wish I had the extra funds to buy one. I think ACOG's are really sharp.

+1 on the ACOG.  That kind of cash buys a LOT of other toys though.

I like the ACOG's too.  I've focused on the essentials, guns and ammo, as any restriction of our rights will occur with guns and ammo and very likely not with accessories like scopes.

ACOG vs. EOTech are for two different purposes.

If you find out anything on the EOTech magnifier, let me know I may "need" one to wring out a bit more capability from my EOTech.  I'll try to remember to ask around the gun club...they'll know over there for sure.

I have handle one EOTech combo and troops are running around here with magnifiers behind their Aimpoints.  I'll say yes for the ability to see targets at further ranges.  Doesn't nessecary extend the cartridges range just your abliity to see the target better.  I've ran Aimpoints and EOtech on my guns during several deployments to Iraq.  Those are great to 200m or so.  For further target enhancement I do like and have carried the ACOG TA01NSN on my M4.  The X factor of the optic allows positive target identification for liabitly reasons.   As much as I like the ACOG they are priced up there.  I do have two Aimpoint M2 series and  contimplating a magnafier also.

Rumor has it that Bushnell is coming out with an ACOG style sight at a substantially lower price. Something to keep an eye out for.

I just saw this.... I actually have one of the first generation magnifiers that I used on a first generation HoloSight. The field of view was crap. It has been in a "probably never use again" box of parts with Shok-buffs, Glock magazine loaders and other assorted junk for years.

Holosight/Eotech is great for close range stuff, but if you want magnification, I think that there are better options (CQT, Acog, etc).

I will have to agree with Rob.  THe eye relief on mine is very poor, however, the worse thing is that it is relatively heavy.  THat makes the EoTech + magnifier way too heavy compared to another optic.  My recommendation is keep the EoTech for close range, but if you have a rifle that can actaully reach out a ways (e.g., 6.8, 6.5 Grendel, .308) then get one of the 1x-4x optics.  Many of them have a "donut of death" reticle...almost as good as a red dot at close range but with enough magnification for 300-400 yards.

Something not discussed as far as I have seen, to split the difference. I have an Aimpoint Comp Ml2 2x with a 2 minute dot. The 2x really helps at 200 meters. Up close it works well too. Like in the house.
