What You Need to Know About Flying With Firearms

The plain fact is, in the United States of America we have the right not only to possess firearms but also the right to travel with them to any destination we see fit. The Firearm Owner’s Protection Act of 1986 contains the Safe Passage provision, which explicitly elucidates that citizens have the right to journey state to state with firearms as long as they are locked and unloaded. This freedom of travel is unquestionable… even in instances where a party may cross borders and pass through jurisdictions with varied rules and regulations. As many of us who live along or near the Eastern seaboard know, we can drive through a state like New York with firearms even if they are not legal in the state of New York… the jumble of incongruous and sometimes draconian local laws is not a concern for the people who are merely passing by.

I frequently fly with firearms and ammunition. I follow the TSA rules and regulations and I have never had any problems. I also check the website of the airline (if it's not one that I fly often) and check up on the airlines policy.

I have found the process to be quick and easy.

I do always check with the Texas Department of Public Safety's website to get the latest on states that have CC reciprocity with Texas. I only fly with a firearm to those states. I would never fly to D.C., Chicago, New York, etc. with a firearm. I just don't want to risk the loss of a gun that I like.

I'm not planning on flying with guns anytime soon.... a quick search for the thread from the last "flying with guns" episode will reveal why. :)

Rob, help with the link please. I did a search for "flying with guns" and did not locate the thread. I respect you and the DRTV team more than any others in the field. If you're opposed I'd like to know why and I'll change my habits to follow your advise.

Thanks,

Kid

For anyone unlucky enough to HAVE to come to MA and wish to avoid Boston altogether, I would suggest NEVER arriving into Logan and instead would schedule through Providence TF Green or Hartford's Bradley Intl airports.  They are much easier to get in and out of regardless of whether your traveling with a firearm or not.

I've lived here 27 years and only flew out of Logan once because my flight was canceled out of Green...never again, NEVER!

Pease, Nashua, and Manchester NH are also fairly close to Boston.
