After the apocolypse there won't be any traffic cops so I can ride my atv on the roads without getting a ticket. It gets better gas mileage than my truck.

I'm going with the Jeep TJ Wrangler, mostly because I already have one, it's paid for, and it has going me in and out of some questionable terrain.

Again guys, very cool toys, and a great thread. But you guys must plan on learning Arabic. Because unless the Saudis can get oil here, and our refineries some how keep functioning, and the tanker trucks can still roll, and....and.... About two months or less after the "event" you ain't going to be riding anything you can't peddle, saddle, sail or row. :-\

The picture of the Ural pulling the Rokon (2WD motorcycle), note the date.  They were going to one of the strangest motorcycle rides in the country, the Elephant Ride.  The idea is to recreate Hannibal Crossing the Alps, with a modern twist.  A bunch of crazy motorcyclists gather up in Grant, CO and try to ride over Guanella Pass, a high mountain pass (11,669ft).  Some years, it's an 'easy' ride, other years no one makes it over.

I bet you are right as to where it was headed. Maybe on a snow machine but no way are you going to find me trying that ride on a bike.

My father used to tell about when he was a teenager in the 1930's he delivered papers on a Harley and would run chains on it in the winter time. That was in Maine. a Ural would have made his life a little easier.

WORST PORN THREAD EVER!

Eric, give yourself your own award for comment of the day!!! Damn near fell off my chair reading that.   ;D

This has evolved into a wish-list / show-and-tell. None of these will work post-apocalypse. You're forgetting key points.

1. bug out or bug in, anything else and you're just a moving target

2. if bugging out, get to your bug-out location as quickly as you can; if you're still on the road weeks after TSHTF, something is seriously wrong, and back to the last point in #1. Besides, gas will probably not be available "weeks" after SHTF - except at a price that may be too dear to pay

3. What the hell are you doing on the road anyhow, post-SHTF? You want to be a target of opportunity?

4. Motorcycles are terrible BOVs - fast and agile, yes, good on fuel consumption too, but then they have to be - they don't carry very much fuel. Or anything else for that matter, even with a side car. Especially other people. One of the key rules of SHTF - don't try to go it alone, there is strength in numbers.

And now back to the thread already in progress . . . .  8)

IF you need something for local (and presumed safe) travel, there is always solar -

Post TSHTF...  It's what's for dinner. ;D

Your absolutely right on all point's Path..  BUT (isnt there always), fuel will be available in VERY, VERY limited quantities, and at a dear price indeed, for months.  As people will be siphoning old boats, junked cars, lawn mowers, gas station tanks, whatever.  Many, many of the people who were able to tuff it out and stay put will after several days, weeks, months, will need to relocate.  Many reasons come to mind, food, finding loved ones, worsening neighborhoods due to gangs, & preparing for cold weather, floods, you get the picture.

As we're unable to predict and prepare for everything that may happen, YOU may end up being one of these travelers!

While I really, really like the URAL, and would love to have one, it does still leave the driver WIDE open, and I've got a wife and kid to consider.  So more and more I'm thinking VW baja bug. :-\  That flat floor pan, and the motor over rear drive wheels makes a real differance!  Years ago a friend had one and it was amazing!  Went further than 3 out of four of our 4wd trucks about every time! One truck was lifted with 38" tires... not mine, :( stupid bug!

What you need is a bobbed M35 deuce and a half! Rugged, check. Multifuel engine, check. Carrying capacity, check. MG turret mount, doable.  ;D

Here's a YouTube video of one:
