ST. PETERSBURG — For 54 days, the crew of the U.S. Coast Guard's St. Petersburg-based Venturous patrolled the Caribbean Sea for illegal drugs.

They didn't return empty handed.

On Thursday, the crew found a boat carrying 107 bales of marijuana — about 2,500 pounds with a street value of $1.6 million, according to the Coast Guard. Photos show the marijuana was packed in 45 kilogram bag meant for long grain white rice from Guyana.

The Venturous crew fired warning shots but the four people aboard the boat ignored orders to "heave to." The crew then shot at the engines and seized the drugs, which were off-loaded to Miami authorities on Saturday.

Venturous crew members also found a vessel overloaded with 152 Haitians off the coast of Haiti. The crew followed the boat until the Haitian Coast Guard returned it to port.

The 210-foot Venturous has a crew of 85 officers and personnel.

Now I wonder what ol' Uncle Ben would say about that?

"I expect perdition, I always have. I keep this building at my back, and several guns handy, in case perdition arrives in a form that's susceptible to bullets. I expect it will come in the disease form, though. I'm susceptible to diseases, and you can't shoot a damned disease." ~ Judge Roy Bean, Streets of Laredo

For the Patriots of this country, the Constitution is second only to the Bible for most. For those who love this country, but do not share my personal beliefs, it is their Bible. To them nothing comes before the Constitution of these United States of America. For this we are all labeled potential terrorists. ~ Dean Garrison
