Barack Obama wins Nobel Peace Prize
Praised for "giving people hope"
Has called for the end of nuclear weapons
US President Barack Obama won the Nobel Peace Prize today.

He was awarded the prize for giving the world "hope for a better future" with his work for peace and calls to reduce the global stockpile of nuclear weapons.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee praised Mr Obama for "his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between peoples".

The first African-American to hold his country's highest office, Mr Obama has called for disarmament and worked to restart the stalled Middle East peace process since taking office in January.

"Very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world's attention and given its people hope for a better future," the committee said in a citation.

It awarded the prize to Mr Obama less than nine months into his presidency.

Despite setting out an ambitious international agenda, he has yet to score any breakthrough on the Middle East or Iran's nuclear program, and faces difficult choices on the conduct of the war in Afghanistan.

Last month Mr Obama chaired a historic meeting of the UN Security Council, which unanimously approved a US-drafted resolution calling on nuclear weapons states to scrap their arsenals.

Mr Obama is the third senior US Democrat to win the prize this decade after former Vice President Al Gore won in 2007 along with the UN climate panel and Jimmy Carter in 2002.

The prize will be handed over in Oslo on December 10.

This just shows what a political farce the Peace Prize is. First came Carter and the statement from the committee that it was meant as a rebuke to Bush Sr.

Now a prize that is completely a sham. The nominations had to be in by Feb 1. Obama had been in office 2 weeks and this is for his efforts at starting a world dialog! Pure political BS.

Hey Haz,

I didn't notice your post until after I posted the same idiocy.

The nomination took place two weeks after Odamna became the occupant of the White House.  WTF did that horse's posterior do in those two weeks (or since) that should even get him noticed by the nominating committee?  It is a FARCE.

This is a laugher. Is it April 1st already ???

*Apparently they closed the nominations 2 weeks after he was inaugurated

*They gave him the award based on "his outreach to the Muslim world and attempts to curb nuclear proliferation". In other words, nothing that has tangible peace resulted.

*“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future,” Thorbjoern Jagland, chairman of the Nobel Committee said.

*Lets not forget that Hitler was nominated, and Carter won in 2002

*Also, it is going to be hilarious if they give him this "Peace" award and then a week or two later he decides to ratchet things up in Afghanistan - which I dont think will happen.

You're supposed to earn an award before receiving it. Now if he actually got the international community to stop Iran and North Korea, then we could talk about awards, but this is possibly one of the biggest Whiskey Tango Foxtrot moments of the year.....or decade. I would say the biggest but this health care and Cap-and-Trade FUBAR is going to screw us badly.

Maybe this is why he's "studying" Gen. McChrystal's request for more troops.

Ranks right up there on the WTF list with Arafat's Nobel.

Same page this was announced on FoxNews, they also have a 60,000 more troops needed for Afghanistan. Some peace effort.

This calls for the application to the committee of Nobel's other invention.   >:(
