Pocket Carrying A Single Action Cocked & Locked
« on: April 11, 2016, 10:34:14 PM »
Hello everybody, this is my first post here. I listen to Downrange Radio and considerate it and Michael Bane a great resource.

Is it safe to pocket carry a single action (micro 1911) cocked & locked? I currently carry a Glock 26 IWB with a spare mag but would like something more concealable when carrying is frowned upon. From a safety perspective  I would consider myself a fanatic (to quote Tom Gresham) and would feel comfortable with it. I mildly familiar with 1911s as I have one but have only put 300 rounds through it.

The gun I'm thinking about buying is a Sig P938, I'm leaning towards this because of it's excellent single action trigger.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

a 1911 is one of the safest pistols on the market.  it takes 3 things for it too go bang.

cocked and locked is perfred way to carry.

The p938 doesn't have a grip safety though.

I carry the P938 every day in an Alien Gear IWB holster. No problem, but I do visually and physically check the safety to ensure it is on whenever I am alone, just to be sure.

Because of the lack of a decocker, the 938 made my trainer a little nervous at first, until I showed him I knew the gun and what I was doing.

The p938 doesn't have a grip safety though.

In  his book "Cooper on Handguns", Jeff Cooper recommended pinning the grip safety down.

I believe OP is talking about POCKET CARRY. That's a far cry from IWB.  I've only fondled the P938 in stores but never fired it, so I don't know the gun, but pocket carry would be of some concern. Maybe with a pocket holster that covers the safety?

As long as you use a quality pocket holster and keep other crap out of the pocket, you are fine.
