Thanks for the mini torture test! I really like the M&Ps. On a side note, one of the largest LE agencies in my area just transitioned from 5946s to MP40s and seem to be satisfied with them.

I've seen a LOT of those older S&W semi's in gun shops (also Bud's online) from LE trade-ins, and have been told by more than one shopkeeper not to bother buying one, as they're not too great. Maybe they'd just rather sell you a shiny new something or other?

Tom,

Very nicely done.

My own weapons verification test came out a little different. During 500 round break in:
1) According to my weapons log the front sight broke off at 498 rounds. Sent back to S&W and repaired in a week
2) Magazine release began to fail at round 525 and broke completely at about 577. S&W sent part for me to replace at home. They had identified that as a design flaw.

It goes to show that there will be some problem children from every manufacturer.
I do like the way the gun shoots but do not trust mine enough to carry it. Yours passes the test.

I would say that they are hit or miss.  I know some jobs that still carry them, including the NYPD.  I have fired the 59 series, 40 series and 45 series in both DA/SA and DAO.  My biggest complaints would be the slide-mounted decocker (DA/SA versions) and the triggers feel pretty gritty.  Good guns otherwise though if you get one that's reliable.  I know back in the day when my dept. carried the 5946 they broke more than a couple of extractors which basically gives you an extra baton in a gun fight.

I ran 800 round through my PX4 .40 S&W last weekend with only a before and after cleaning. I only had one FTF and that was my fault because the magazine wasn't 100% seated.

Yes, and the 6906.  Not a fan of either one.

I have three MP's, a MP 40, a MP 9c and a newly acquired MP 9 Pro. My MP 40 has never had any kind of malfunction with over 3000 rounds through it, my MP 9c had a minor failure to feed problem, which S & W promptly fixed and my newish MP 9 Pro has had no malfunctions with about 700 or so rounds through it. All three of these pistols are extremely accurate (even the 9c), have great ergonomics and have a great no B.S. warranty from S & W.
The MP 9 Pro has now become my favorite range pistol. Very good accuracy, hardly noticable recoil with fast target acquisition by the fiber optic front sight. Love these pistols especially the Pro!

Below is a link to the MP Forum thread by people who have had no problems with their MP's.
