Title: The Moscow Mule (helping to corrupt the masses with retro drinks)
Post by: fightingquaker13 on June 09, 2011, 02:29:42 AM
I traded my Chinese motor scooter away to the head of my HOA's yard crew in exchange for fixing my sprinklers. It was a fair trade, as the the scooter sucks as bad as the plumbing in the lawn.  Regardless, he gave me a bottle of vodka in thanks. Now, I hate vodka. I like rum, scotch, gin, tequila and Cognac, but not vodka. However, my lawn guy is Jamaican. When I was about to refuse the bottle he said, "Mon ya must try ta the Moscow mule".  "What?" says I.  He explained it was a combination of Jamaican ginger beer (my favorite soft drink as its not sweet but has a serious ginger bite)and here its poured over ice with vodka and a squeeze of lime. Damned if it isn't the best warm weather sun downer ever. It beats a G@T, Margarita or Mojito. This thing rocks. Recipe is : 2oz good vodka, ice, good ginger beer (I prefer JCS country style, but whatever you can get, and ginger ale is NOT a substitute) mixed and stirred. Seriously, this is the perfect summer cocktail. It was popular in the 1940s and should be popular again. Spice, a little citrus tang and a little kick. Try it, you'll like it.FWIW.

Ginger beer RAWKS!  It could only get better with vodka in it.

When I was in Singapore 30-years ago, they had a similar drink made with Scotch and ginger beer over rocks.  I don't remember what it was called, but like the Moscow Mule, it was an excellent sundowner on a warm night.

And, how could anyone not like vodka?  It's virtually without flavor and improves almost every drink it's added to.

yeah..don't understand that one either.   And FQ has Gin on his Like List....must be abnormal taste buds  ;D ;D

Never liked Gin....  A couple I met years ago in the Army told me the way to develop a taste for gin was to wait for a hot summer day, drink half a can of beer and refill the can with gin.  raved about it.  I've never tried it

Don't understand the Rum.... Run and  Vodka are my tops.

Scotch you have to sneak up on....Irish Whiskey helps develop a taste for it...

Gonna have to give the Mule a try.

Gin tastes like licking the bottom of somebody's foot.

Vodka is in most every good hot weather drink though!  :-\  Gotta like it!   ;D

And without fail, a well mixed Captain and Coke on ice hits the spot any day!  Mmmmmmm!!!  I likes sugar!  ;)

I was young and things went very, very, badly wrong. I still shudder a bit at the smell of straight vodka (Note to board members, playing a Red Dawn drinking game with frozen Stoli is not as cool as it sounds, too many Russians die. :P ;D). But, with the right mixers vodka works.

I have nightmares of Aftershock. I swear there was never a party where a girl didn't show up with a bottle and wanting help getting to the crystals.......I feel sick just thinking about it.

Note for the "Do with what you have" crowd :
You can NOT make a screwdriver with Vodka and Tang.
Well, actually you can but you will regret it .   ;D

Quaker, The thing you said that keeps going through my mind is you TRADED OFF YOUR SCOOTER!.   ???

2 years ago we ordered a little 150cc off ebay for $600, and it's the best money I've ever spent!  Doesn't need a tag, insurance, anything, other than about $2.60 worth of gas a week.  It's got something like 3,000 clicks on it now.  And that's saying something when almost everything is within 2 miles of us...  One of us takes it somewhere or another every single day, and we actually fight over who "has to take the car"!

I hope your just upgrading to a newer model right?  8)

It was a Chinese POS called a "Baccio". Looked like a Vespa, sounded like a Vespa, ran like a Chinese POS. ;D I paid $800 for it with less than 2k miles so I can't bitch, but it just wasn't enough bike. Thing is, all the roads around my place are 45 mph. A scooter, while great if you live in a city where everyone is doing 30, is just a death trap if the surrounding traffic is going 55. It took me about two trips with me maxing the thing out to hit 50 to realize that. If I get a new one it will be a real motor bike, which you can also find cheap on craig's list. I like mopeds/scooters (a flash back to college when I made the rent as a courier in DC), but they only work if you live down town.

Grown men riding scooters.  Do your vaginas get a bit sore or what?

As to the conversation on booze....

I'm a scotch guy but if you buy more than rot gut vodka, gin or any other liquor, you will get what you pay for.  Good gin is very good in any number of cool refreshing cocktails and vodka can be mixed with darn near anything.

Top shelf makes a difference and never mix good booze with soda pop!

Try Plymouth gin. It is amazing. I'm more of a G@T guy, but that stuff I can drink pretty much straight as long as I sternly warn it with a bit of vermouth. ;)
As far as the moped thing? They are the perfect city vehicle. Fast as the average flow of traffic, you can white line to the head of a traffic light and you don't need a parking spot. Just lock it to a lamp post like a bike. In DC, I never got a tag for mine and never got ticketed because if it was under 100 ccs it wasn't required.

Sounds tasty FQ. Thanks for sharing.

Tombogan, I did the Skyy and Tang for a moment. A short moment.  :)

Do like V with lemonade after mowing the lawn. Been years since I have done that though.

It went down smooth enough, it was the 2 days it spent coming up that were rough  ;D
Used to like Vodka and Grapefruit juice but one of my Heart meds is supposed to react badly with grapefruit.

Never understood it, but EVERY time I ever ordered a screwdriver anywhere in Europe they'd give me a glass filled to the rim with vodka and a little bottle of orange pop...  Once you got the glass down far enough to cut the vodka with the pop there was no point.  They also served stuff like bannana juice for breakfast instead of orange juice.  It was good!  Just weird.   :-\

Sounds like a proper bar.

Around here we have a place called the Sunset Grill.  They serve breakfasts on Sunday, and because there's a law against selling liquor before 1100 hours, they offer a free Bloody Mary for a buck extra on their standard breakfast.  For $2 more, you can get an upgrade which is a pint of stuff.  Essentially, it's a glass full of vodka and some ice with enough mix to turn it pink if you stir it well.  Two eggs, sausage or bacon, homefries or toast WITH the upgraded Bloody costs $6.  Bunny and I hit it almost every Sunday.  Then we nap for a couple of hours.

Its because they knew how to serve a drink correctly BM. In an ideal world a mixed drink should come strong as hell over rocks with the mixer on the side. At the first sip or two you get that nice little burn to let you know you're not drinking lemon aid. As you sip, you add mixer. That and the melting ice mellows the thing out, and lets you nurse it for a while. Its a good thing. The perfect rum and coke is a glass full of rum and ice with a can of coke on the side. YMMV.

Well, I can tell you guys aren't going to like this.

But on a hot evening a Captain Morgan over french vanilla ice cream float is REALLY GOOD!  Cherry on top, and see how fast your girlfriend / wife gets plowed!   :D

May have to add a little coke in the first one.  But it's always a favorite.  ;)

Don't have the exact recipe anymore, but had it a few times.   Amazing how much alcohol you can drink when it's mixed with ice cream.

It involves Vodka, Vanilla Ice Cream, Kahlua, bananas and a blender.

Doubtless soon followed by hookers, tattos, surly cops, divorce attorneys, and the hangover from hell. " How did I get here? This is not beautiful house, this is not my beautiful wife". ;D

Can't have been in Blighty, the measures of bar spirits there are embarrassing and expensive, I think one shot is a 1/5 or even 1/6 of a gill.

Vodka & Fresca makes a nice afternoon libation btw. Low Carb. too!

Jeez Bic, most people over here think a "gill" is what a fish breathes through.
Over here a shot is generally one ounce.

Oh yeah? It's become a retiree/snowbird haven these days. I live between Kerrville and Fredericksburg but come to KV most days for tennis, gym, banking etc. - but Fbg. has a better restaurant/bar scene.
