I could care less about the broad, or the story for that matter, but this kind of crap is getting insane.

That's not PC, its fact Bill. I'm not wading through the links, just laying this out."Indian giver" refers to promising something then reneging on the deal. In probably one of the more bizarrely Freudian displacement episodes of all time, white folks associated this with Indians. WTF? We made how many treaties and them broke them at our convenience? Invited chiefs to "peace talks" and shot them under a flag of truce? And then we blame them for being so dishonest that we name the act after them. That's not PC, that's just the damn truth. And frankly I do think that the term isn't just racist, its slander and embarrassing to us.

How come nobody cried until now? 40 years ago all this stuff was just fine, now the Cleveland Indians are catching hell for their logo? The only reason this kind of crap gets any traction is because people let it. Now if you've got a coffee cup with Stars & Bars on it, you're a "racist". The word no longer has any meaning directly because of crap like this.
-
While I think that FQ's tirade is a bunch of touchy feely crap, I will note that each of those treaties was signed further West than the one before it.
This is actually a 1st amendment issue.
As for the Indians being offended, f*ck'em, they lost.
-
I have a Cleveland hat BECAUSE of the logo!
;D
As to Kris Jenner and the rest of the dimwits, including Bruce....find a piece of driftwood and send the happy band of dimwits oFf on a long journey to "who the f..k cares, Island!"

Thats my point Bill. I don't think its crap, I think in this case it IS racist. As to why didn't people care forty years ago, they did, only the ones in charge didn't. I'm no PC maven as you know, but sometimes "PC" is just another term for good manners. This is one of those times.

Actually we consider FQ to be our token PC maven.

So now I'm just a token? A brother can't get on this board without affirmative action? Is that what you're saying? Racist asshole!

Not at all FQ, what I'm saying is if you need AA you don't belong here.
The rest of us believe in earning our stuff.

There was no such thing as "PC" 40 years ago. No one was "in charge", because no one cared. It was recognised as being silly and stupid then, which is exactly why nobody paid an ounce of attention to it. That song got plenty of air play when I was in high school. No radio station ever even thought of "banning" it. It goes to show how far off the rails we've become. Today something "offends" everyone because no one can take a joke.
And for what it's worth I agree with Tom. The Indians lost, f#*k em. As far as I'm concerned we should have used slave labor to clean up Hiroshima, then sent them a bill!

Gawd, you are such a tool. The phrase stems from whites promising stuff to Indians in the 19th Century, and then reneging on it. Hence the phrase - what are you, an Indian giver? Meaning simply you promised something and now you're not delivering.
And before you get your panties in wad, FQ, reneging has nothing to do with African Americans.

I am well aware of the origin of the term Path. However, the story you tell is not wholly accurate. It actually stems from early settlers taking Indian offers of goods as gifts rather than barter and when reciprocity was not forthcoming the "gifts" were taken back. My complaint is in the usage of the term. Am I the only one here who thinks being polite to people is a good idea? Did being conservative sudenly come to mean being rude? WTF?

When I heard about this recent Indian Giver scandel, I was honestly and completely confused. I always thought an "indian giver" was a white guy who gave the Indians something only to take it back later. Therefore, I always thought it was putting white folks in the bad light. I had to look it up to learn that it was based on Indians' actions. Sometimes people need to get over it, sometimes people need to think before they talk, and usually it's both.
Now quit this Indian bullcrap and start calling them "Native Americans." ;)

If you give something and take it back, you're an "Indian Giver". We worry about silly crap like this offending while "educated" kids riot and turn vehicles over because they don't think Paterno should have been fired. Talk about f*#ked up priorities!
-
Considering that the people in question are generally very vocal about letting folks know they ARE NOT "Indians", they are "Native Americans", the whole thing is a bunch of crap.
We should have given them all the Mandan treatment then we would not have these issues.
-

Well it may have started when the settlers bought Manhattan Island for a few beads. Turns out those Indians didn't "own" Manhattan and were just gypsy-like squatters, who got the bead on a con. The settlers had to pony up much larger amounts of payment to the "real owners" of Manhattan several years latter.
And don't forget Chief McGivelray (sp) of the Creeks, head of the other southern tribes, who played the English against the Spanish and finally threw in with the latter. While there were many atrocities committed by the settlers/founders there were also instances where they tried to right things.

That song would have been shot to crap if they changed the title and lyrics to "Native American Giver". Leave it to the PC crowd to wreck anything and everything at the drop of a hat, in the name of "what's right". ::)

You're not a Maven? I've been telling folks about the Maven I know online. "I know this Maven online and *he* says......"
Now what am I gonna do?

It's Amer-Indians, you racist. ;) ;D
And that term includes all of 'em from Canada to the tip of South America.

I thought the proper term was, "People of Redness".

While I am all for being polite, some folks simply need to get a freaking life.

Well, If you want to be really PC it's "original peoples" and applies to abo's world wide.
On a personal level, I was raised with the Native American traditions, and the thing that really stood out to me was that the full bloods were a bunch of lazy drunken whiners who had spent the last 150 years sitting on their azzes pissing and moaning.
Pretty much a prototype for those other lazy vermin the Palestinians.

Drive through any Indian reservation in Arizona. They're all still there. Even with hundreds of millions of revenue dollars from all of their casinos, they still live like pigs. Yet another minority no amount of money or politically correct attitude can "fix".

The endless lament, Oh, the evil White man stole our land.
Horse shit, those lazy bastards traded it off for several jugs of booze.

What made it "theirs" to begin with? What courthouse were the deeds locked up in? They had squatters rights about as much as the "occupy" crowd does. If I'm not mistaken they got their asses kicked out this morning.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York judge has upheld the city's dismantling of the Occupy Wall Street encampment, saying that the protesters' first amendment rights don't entitle them to camp out indefinitely in the plaza.
Supreme Court Justice Michael Stallman on Tuesday denied a motion by the demonstrators seeking to be allowed back into the park with their tents and sleeping bags.
Police cleared out the protesters in a nighttime sweep early Tuesday. The judge upheld the city's effective eviction of the protesters after an emergency appeal by the National Lawyers Guild.
The protesters have been camped out in privately owned Zuccotti Park since mid-September. Mayor Michael Bloomberg said he ordered the sweep because health and safety conditions and become "intolerable" in the crowded plaza.

I'm legally a native american, I could get money and bennies from the feds if I choose too.
I never have and I never will. I didn't earn it, I don't want it.
Frankly the state of most tribes is so bad its sicking.

Actually, indigenous native North Americans came over from Eurasia via the Bering Straights some ten or twelve centuries ago. The truly indigenous Americans are from central and south America for the most part.
I was born here and I'm not considered a native...what gives? I want a casino...

What? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ? ?
There are no - repeat NO - indigenous peoples in the new world. None. Not a one. Everyone here is an immigrant or from immigrant stock, including those so-called "native Americans"

Not arguing Path but what about the Mayans? I thought they were here prior...

There's some debate over exactly when/where/how the first folks came to the Americas, but they all came from somewhere else. I guess it comes down to where you draw the indigenous line. They were all here long before the Europeans "discovered" the "New World," but they didn't originate here. Does that make sense?
-
There's also debate that homo sapiens stemmed from the African continent as well and spread out all the world. I'm a really white African descendant who buys his sunscreen by the 55 gallon drum!
I still want a casino....
Then we have the whole Garden of Eden thing (currently Iraq), the great flood and all that old Testament stuff to muddle of the whole works.
;D
