I'm selling some stuff this week and will find myself in possession of $1000 that the wife said I have to spend on guns.
I'm not sure what to get, but have some ideas. I can get an AK and a home defense shotgun for $1000, right? how about something from the Performance Center? Maybe some parts to build another AR? A Ruger Super Redhawk is within that limit, as is a Chiappa Rhino. Don't really know what yet. Probably will end up depositing it in the bank and paying some bills. That's what my conscience is telling me to do, but it's fun to think about.
What would you guys buy with the money?
-
I think I would use it to buy a Flattop Blackhawk .357 in mint shape and use the rest of the money buying reloading components to try to wear it out.
-
Depends... If I were to buy into the election year hype, I'd get all the primers I could.
Otherwise, I'd be torn between putting really good triggers in my ARs, a 5.56 suppressor or a 44 Mag revolver.
-
Something you don't already have, but would like.
Or Ammo.
-
The "donut hole" in my wifes medicare prescription drug plan!
Priorities.....
-
An extra 1000? I'd get some tweaks done on the guns I already have.
-
Let me break this down for you. There are three purposes to your purchase: Collectable. SHOOTER. SD/SHTF/EOTWAWKI. You need to decide which is more important right now.
COLLECTABLE: There were some of Col Charles Askins rifles for auction last week. Or maybe a 25th anniversary Glock or 100 Anniversary 1911. How about a gold plated Walther PPK? Something you're not going to shoot, but put away and show off to friends. I don't have any of those. My IBM M1 Carbine is about as close as I get to a collectible.
SHOOTER: What do you shoot regularly? What do you want to shoot? Buy something you'll really, REALLY use. CAS? IDPA/IPSC? GSSF? Bullseye? 3 Gun? Trap/Skeet? Varmint? National Match? Deer? Turkey? Gator?
SD/SHTF/EOTWAWKI: Is this the priority for the next 1$K? An FN FAL maybe? Or a tacticool shotgun? How about a bunch of C&R stuff to waterproof and bury in the back yard? Or your next 1911?
See so simple, just drill down on what's important.
Oh what the heck, get a Blackhawk. I've got it in my mind that even though SA revolvers aren't my thing I should have one anyway. But I'm looking for something under $200. Just to say I have one. Like my 30/30. Somebody's old junker. As long as it shoots.
-
3-5 22's &15,000 to20,000 rnd's of Ammo,
-
I'm in a similar boat, actually just half of what you have $500 after my next trip. I got mine from travel per deim for work and the wife may or may not know about it (our version of don't ask don't tell-hey she gets everything else, besides I'd just eat it all if I have to give it back ;D).
What I am considering:
Ammo 22LR, 45 ACP, 12 guage slugs and 00 Buck (all guns that I own)
A 22LR pistol (Ruger MKIII w/threaded barrel)
Tweaking the guns I have now (bull barrel/stock for the 10/22, sling and sights for the 870 and belt/holsters for the XDM)
Talking to my dad this Spring break about going in on a Dillon 650.
Give it to the house (wife) to make up for all the stuff I lost on my last trip.
All, none or any combo is likely to happen ;D
-
Seeing as I am having rotator cuff surgery next month I would buy a Ponness-Warren Autodrive for my XL650 press.
-
An actual M1 Carbine and I'd have the civilian model I have converted to shoot 7.62 x 25 TOK ammo.

Nip that in the bud, guy....don't let her get away with telling you how to spend your own money!!!....Some women!! ;D ;D ;D
Next thing you know she will be out buying you guns like Red did for her guy. Once it gets started, no telling where it will end. ;D ;D
-
I've had a good 30 year experience with USPSA/IPSC competition... met some very good friends, and gained a little skill...
assemble a Production class rig or shoot Limited minor if you want to use high cap mags
Glock 34 in 9mm
Blade Tech dropped offset holster
good gun belt
(2) Blade Tech douple mag pouches
(5) Glock mags
spend the rest on ammo, or bullets if you reload
have fun

I know, right? I mentioned paying off some bills with the money but she wouldn't hear it. She loves the S&W 627. Maybe...
-
I forgot to mention Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle or lever gun in the original post. Both are on the list.

Jealous?

Ooooh, maybe a Garand.
-
Take your wife out to dinner, or an extra nice dinner at home, (one she doesn't have to cook)...
ammo.
Ooooh, maybe a Garand.
Can't knock that choice I had to get one when I had the $$$.
CMP still has good service grades from $600 (and up)..
Did I mention ammo? Big box of primers aren't bad to have either...I have a few boxes, and do not reload, just in case I need to barter with them...
;D

Mag 40
+1
Beat me to it, I thought about training last night as I was drifting off. You can never have too much training and MAG 40 is at the top of my list.

Some skill...HA! HA!
Don't let him fool ya folks...he is a USPSA Master in both Limited and Open.
That's impressive!

I don't own a diesel vehicle at all, but I would look into buying a kit that converts used cooking oil to diesel.... then later on I would buy a diesel....or put the $1,000 down towards a Volkswagen with the TDI engine. It gets a for real 45 to 50 MPG.
WARNING! thread drift ahead....I have seen the kits and videos on YouTube before. Locally, you can get the blue plastic drums for either for free or for $5 each. I think some even have the snap lids and retaining rings with them. I'd be curious if you could fill one of the removable lid ones with water and mount it upside down if it would leak. If it didn't leak....(sorry, I probably have searched this some more on the internet) I would look into getting my own very large plastic funnel shaped "bottoms" made...and then turn around and sell them to others to make biodiesel on the cheap, that they could then snap on to their locally available blue drums.
IIRC, the bottom funnel shape is useful for draining off the glycerines that solidify on the bottom of the tank/drum. The glycerines are heavier and fall to the bottom.

As a note on cooking oil/bio-diesel/diesel engines......from experience seen from my youngest son's involvement on the ag bio-diesel/ethanol production team in HS, there are some things to consider.
First, if the vehicle/engine is older or high mileage, all the fuel lines and most of the fuel components will probably need to be replaced if running bio-diesel....because the bio stuff has a particular cleansing property (the byproduct of a 'bad' batch of bio-diesel is glycerine/soap) and will clean any and all built up deposits from the fuel system (so be ready with filters) and in some cases will disintegrate older hoses.
Also, a diesel engine can and will run on straight cooking oil (Ol' Rudolph's first engines were designed to run on peanut oil), if properly filtered through an oil filter. The one caveat to this is that the engine must fist be started and warmed up to operating temperature via diesel before being switched over to oil. This is a simple piping and switching issue. Also, before shutting down the engine after running on straight oil, you must remember to switch back to diesel in order to purge the system so as to allow for cranking the next time around.
The local HS Ag/FFA department has a tractor that will run on regular diesel, bio-diesel, or straight filtered cooking oil.

If I had an extra thousand dollars, I'd buy WORLD PEACE.
Actually I'd get a subcompact 1911 in .45 acp. World Peace would probably be too pricey.

OK, the biodiesel thing...no.
I have acquired the money. Most of it's sitting in the safe (had to pay for flute lessons last night). Still haven't decided what to buy. Might even say "screw it" and buy a new camera. The Sony NEX 5n is really affordable and has great potential. Hopefully Sony will start making some worthwhile lenses soon.
Update: I ordered a Mossberg 500 field/security combo a while ago. My first shotgun.

Anybody want to come out and teach me how to use this thing?

You buy the Food, Lodging, Gas and AMMO ( About 500 rounds) and I will be there Monday. ;D

since I am fiddling around with those micarta grips....I am thinking about buying and/or building my own CNC router.
I found a place online that will sell plans for $25 and then like all the stepper motors and steel and what not would come in right around $1,000 for the whole sha-bang.

There are probably plenty plug-&-play out there with all the business going out of business. My shop in RI had several small ones they peddled off when they bought the big dog. Check the local industrial classifieds.
The programming is relatively simple depending on the software platform. Our wood shop supervisor did all of the programming himself and he could barely turn a computer on without help.

Father-in-law has one sitting in his barn. High dollar unit he uses for making faux log siding, we he doesn't his hired hand does.... Wait he fired his hired hand, I wonder what that thing is doing up there?
BTW I was in Benchmade's plant last fall on a tour with a bunch of Manufacturing engineers and they do their handles in some fancy gigs-WAY TOO much work for what they need and not very flexible (think 20 at time with one spindle). While your building one, put six spindle on a pitched center (or four or whatever) and do multiple parts at a time. ;)
