This site is pretty cool to fool around with. You can select a city, along with the nuclear weapon you wish to detonate, and it will show you the blast radius, along with all assorted other damage. You can choose ground or air burst, along with size in kilotons, all the way up to 100 megatons. It even has a inventory list of most all of the bombs of the nuclear equipped nations.
It shows fireball size, 20 and 5 PSI over pressure zones, as well as radius for radiation contamination and third degree burns. Good to know with Iran so close, and Hussein so impotent.
-
If Detroit was nuked I'd be okay as long as the fallout didn't blow this way. 8)
-
If Wright Patterson Air Base takes a 100MT surface blast, I'm toast...but at least there is a chance it will be painless.....
-
There are no targets near enough to me to bother me. Even a 100MT on the Portsmouth sub base would not effect me directly.
However, everything that has to travel to this area passes through the area that would be devastated by practically any bomb aimed at Portsmouth. Effects would only be temporary though since all the traffic could be easily rerouted to the West.

In todays nuclear arsenals, 1 to 1.5 Megatons is considered a very high yield weapon. The 50 Megaton "Tzar Bomba" air dropped weapons from the 50's and 60's have been replaced with easier to deliver MIRV, (Multiple Impact Reentry Vehicles), that fit on top of today's sub launched ICBM's. In this regard "less is more".
-
I only checked the 100 MT Tzar Bomba, the largest designed an airburst would send fall out within 10 or 15 miles of here, but the winds blow in the other direction, and there are a couple chains of hills in between.
( I also checked if it went off over Brunswick NAS , that didn't come any where near here. But I would not want to be in Portland Me. !!! )
-
Don't worry about that Tzar bomb. They'd never get it over here since it's so big. The most likely threat is from the islamic nut jobs. They certainly have the will and are working hard on the means I am sure. Anything they would realistically use would be in the kiloton range.
-
I thought of that, but the nearest worthwhile targets are all down in the Seacoast so I figured if I was safe from the REALLY big one I didn't need to worry about the realistic possibilities.
-
If someone toasts Luke AFB in the afternoon when the winds are predominantly from the West, houses in Phx will REALLY be cheap.
-
I have a bad feeling before all of this ISIS nonsense ends, we'll see some type of nuclear weapon detonated somewhere in that part of the world. Israel is getting more nervous of Iran every passing day. Obama is perfectly willing to allow them to go nuclear. I rather doubt Israel is. This is going to ride on how long Israel is going to wait. My guess is their patience is quickly coming to an end with the whole Muslim world...... Especially Iran.
-
Nostradamus predicted this, if you believe in that nonsense!
-
I think what's so impressive is that it's not near as "impressive" as I would imagine. Actually downright unimpressive. Sure compared to conventional bombs it's hugh, but on the world scale a single bomb covers a might small area.
Growing up on the other side of the Savannah River from "The Savannah River Nuke Plant" we did duck and cover drills and always worried either about an accident or Russian bomb. Looking at it now it's silly. The effects would have mainly stayed on the plant property.
Even a 100KT dropped on Hartsfield-Latoya Jackson-La-De-DA Heliport will only basically affect the airport. Downtown Atlanta won't be touched and with the prevailing winds all the fallout will simply go NW up I-85.

Alf, unlike the Vogtle Plant on the GA side of the river, Savannah River's reactors are breeder reactors that were instrumental in making tritium for bomb triggers. It surely would have made a big mess if someone set off a nuke at that facility and those five reactors didn't shut down correctly. Remember, it's a .gov run facility and therefor managed by civilian/government contractors.
A warm and fuzzy I don't feel about Savannah River.
I spent quite a bit of time at Vogtle when I worked in the biz. Clean plant, nice folks... Augusta's city jail was pretty clean as well!
But that's another story... ;D

Timothy, I grew up in Millen. A little ways SW, but still too close for comfort.
I consulted at SRNP. Was working in the main admin building, helping them digitize all plant records, plans and drawings. In an emergency they would be available as needed anywhere, not just on plant property. Novel idea for 1985.
Let me relate the typical government way of running things on my first day there.
I pulled up to the main admin building, visitors parking lot. There were two big doors separated by about 25'. The one on the left had extremely large sign that says, "Red Badges Only". Lots of people are going to-fro the "Red Badges Only" door. The other door is blank with only a few people are going in and out. As a visitor with NO BADGE, which door would you pick?
Long story short, I went in the other door, which as it turns out is for employees only. The "Red Badge Only" door is for visitors who are given... Red Badges. Fortunately, my demeanor that day was just the right touch of confident and authoritative. I must have said just the right words to put them on the defensive. They got me a non-red badge and let me in the employee's entrance, all week.
Evidently all visitors are warned ahead of time to go in the "red" door. I missed the memo.
And that's how Brian Williams and I saved the free world from WWIII.

ROFLMAO.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
You're a funny guy, Alf!
They're re-allocating it to be a MOX facility to reprocess plutonium into commercially viable fuel from what I understand.
Fun times!

It's got nothing to do with predictions. It's common sense. Do you really think Iran will go nuclear over the long haul without terrorists getting involved? It's only a matter of time. I hope I run out of it before it happens.
-
Iran..terrorists....is there a difference?
The nutjob mullahs/imams/whatevers that run the politics of that $#ithole wouldn't hesitate to get a nuke into Israel. Wouldn't have to be a "nuke" like we commonly think of them either.
I'm sure they are generating enough thoroughly toxic waste that would poison Israelis for a hundred years. A "dirty" bomb will waste enough people to make the Iranians happy....then they'll do it again.

I mentioned Nostradamus sarcastically.
No, Iran would go nuclear if and when they had a chance to melt Israel!

Iranian passports gets one into and out of Venezuela quicker than your state's driver's license can get you on an airplane flight. The border area around Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay is a big donor base for Hezbollah.
And speaking of Iran...The Argentine Prosecutor Nisman, who "committed suicide", had an extensive report about a terrorist bomb that was detonated outside the largest Jewish Center in that country in 1994. The report was about to be presented to the Argentine congress. During the 10 year investigation, Nisman accused President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner and Hector Timerman, the Foreign Secretary, of covering up Iranian involvement to keep the Iranian oil coming in. The Argentine President and Foreign Secretary were also said to have obstructed the investigation.
The Persians mean to take us down and they are beginning to exert influence across the world. For me there is just too much apparent coordination in the hordes streaming across our border to attribute that feat to the Prophet Hussein in the White House. I just don't believe that the Prophet Hussein and his people don't have the talent or ability to pull off this flood....but someone else appears to have that ability. Who is on the list of countries desiring to destabilize the US?
So yes, Mitch...you are right about "...is there a difference?". I think clearly they are one in the same with the Iranians waging a proxy war in the Middle East with terrorists while focusing on destabilization in other areas around the globe. They may be "mad mullahs" but they have a plan and influence.
I'm just sayin'.....

Back in the early 90's there was one report on CNN that Western intelligence agencies were tracking 2 Russian warheads that had been sold to Iran . That was back in the "wild West" days of the transition from communism when commanders were selling fuel, weapons, and anything else in order to not only line their pockets, but to just feed their troops. You could have bought a fully equipped sub for $200,000 if you had cash.
Only heard the report once must have been the Brits, they have the Official Secrets Act and "D" notices so they can shut down leaks far quicker than we do.
-
Just look at the direction the world has headed in the last 50 years involving nuclear weapons, and who controls them. In the late 50's and early 60's you basically had the U.S. and the Soviet Union. We hated each other, but both countries valued life. Nikita Khrushchev, the bad guy on the block, proved that by backing down during the Cuban Missile Crisis. He did so based on Kennedy's stand at the time. As bad as he was, he did possess the common sense that in a nuclear war there would be no winners.
Today you have a bunch of total nut job countries like North Korea, Pakistan, and soon Iran who have gone nuclear. All of these nations are crazy, and run by idiots. And all but welcome death to their citizens at the chance to kill Americans, and damage our country. All of these countries hate Jews, Americans, and the West in general, along with what it represents. (Freedom and Christianity). It's only a matter of time before someone who has zero value for human life, detonates one somewhere and causes massive radioactive contamination, and monumental loss of life. Then all bets are off.
This is all a bit like giving a 12 year old a new Ferrari, then wondering why he wrecked it.
-
One thing about North Korea.
It's known that they have nukes, and they are working on a delivery system, (long range missile) but, if you look back over the history of the NK nuke program they have not been using them in the sense of taking out SK or Japan, they are getting more mileage out of them on the economic front, extorting much needed oil and funds from the other involved nations. Unless they are pushed into a corner it is very unlikely NK will use their nukes in the military sense of the phrase.
The whole problem could have been prevented 60 years ago if the UN and Truman administration had the courage.
Iran is another case where courage by a Democrat administration could have headed off 30+ years of confrontation. But expecting Democrats to act with courage in the face of America's enemies is like expecting the sun to rise in the West.

I looked up appeasement in the dictionary and it said to see the Democrat National Committee.

They didn't learn a damned thing from Munich.

Such a shocker that if you pay blackmail money to a fruitcake nut job regime, for some reason they never stop asking for more money.
Kinda like dealing with the IRS!

Or Democrats.

This website is pretty interesting as well. It tracks daily radiation "leakage" from nuclear power plants, military bases, nuclear waste storage centers, and places like that. Most anywhere that deals with anything radioactive. Check out the area around southern, Japan. (Nagasaki). While the area around Fukushima looks surprisingly low.
-
Since we are talking about Nukes and nuclear waste, thought I'd pass on something I've recently became aware of.
Thorium nuclear power plants.
It seems we got started on Uranium plants in the 60s because they fit nicely with producing nuclear weapons...which were more fashionable back then.
Here is a link showing the "Pros and Cons" of Thorium based plants. It is a pro Thorium site, so might have bias.

The nuke plants used for producing bomb material (plutonium) are commonly called "Breeder reactors".
