I think what's so impressive is that it's not near as "impressive" as I would imagine.  Actually downright unimpressive.   Sure compared to conventional bombs it's hugh, but on the world scale a single bomb covers a might small area.

Growing up on the other side of the Savannah River from  "The Savannah River Nuke Plant" we did duck and cover drills and always worried either about an accident or Russian bomb.   Looking at it now it's silly.  The effects would have mainly stayed on the plant property.

Even a 100KT dropped on Hartsfield-Latoya Jackson-La-De-DA Heliport   will only basically  affect the airport.   Downtown Atlanta won't be touched and with the prevailing winds all the fallout will simply go NW up I-85.

Alf, unlike the Vogtle Plant on the GA side of the river, Savannah River's reactors are breeder reactors that were instrumental in making tritium for bomb triggers.  It surely would have made a big mess if someone set off a nuke at that facility and those five reactors didn't shut down correctly.  Remember, it's a .gov run facility and therefor managed by civilian/government contractors.

A warm and fuzzy I don't feel about Savannah River.

I spent quite a bit of time at Vogtle when I worked in the biz.  Clean plant, nice folks...  Augusta's city jail was pretty clean as well!

But that's another story...   ;D

Timothy,  I grew up in Millen.  A little ways SW, but still too close for comfort.

I consulted at SRNP.    Was working in the main admin building, helping them digitize all plant records, plans and drawings.   In an emergency they would be available as needed anywhere, not just on plant property.  Novel idea for 1985.

Let me relate the typical government way of running things on my first day there.

I pulled up to the main admin building, visitors parking lot.   There were two big doors separated by about 25'.  The one on the left had extremely large sign that says, "Red Badges Only".  Lots of people are going to-fro the "Red Badges Only" door.   The other door is blank with only a few people are going in and out.    As a visitor with NO BADGE, which door would you pick?

Long story short, I went in the other door, which as it turns out is for employees only.  The "Red Badge Only" door is for visitors who are given...  Red Badges.       Fortunately, my demeanor that day was just the right touch of confident and authoritative.   I must have said just the right words to put them on the defensive.   They got me a non-red badge and let me in the employee's entrance, all week.

Evidently all visitors are warned ahead of time to go in the "red" door.   I missed the memo.

And that's how Brian Williams and I saved the free world from WWIII.

ROFLMAO.. ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

You're a funny guy, Alf!

They're re-allocating it to be a MOX facility to reprocess plutonium into commercially viable fuel from what I understand.

Fun times!

It's got nothing to do with predictions. It's common sense. Do you really think Iran will go nuclear over the long haul without terrorists getting involved? It's only a matter of time. I hope I run out of it before it happens.

Iran..terrorists....is there a difference?
The nutjob mullahs/imams/whatevers that run the politics of that $#ithole wouldn't hesitate to get a nuke into Israel. Wouldn't have to be a "nuke" like we commonly think of them either.
I'm sure they are generating enough thoroughly toxic waste that would poison Israelis for a hundred years. A "dirty" bomb will waste enough people to make the Iranians happy....then they'll do it again.

I mentioned Nostradamus sarcastically.

No, Iran would go nuclear if and when they had a chance to melt Israel!

Iranian passports gets one into and out of Venezuela quicker than your state's driver's license can get you on an airplane flight.   The border area around Argentina, Brazil, and Paraguay is a big donor base for Hezbollah.

And speaking of Iran...The Argentine Prosecutor Nisman, who "committed suicide", had an extensive report about a terrorist bomb that was detonated outside the largest Jewish Center in that country in 1994.  The report was about to be presented to the Argentine congress.  During the 10 year investigation, Nisman accused President Christina Fernandez de Kirchner and Hector Timerman, the Foreign Secretary, of covering up Iranian involvement to keep the Iranian oil coming in.  The Argentine President and Foreign Secretary were also said to have obstructed the investigation.

The Persians mean to take us down and they are beginning to exert influence across the world.  For me there is just too much apparent coordination in the hordes streaming across our border to attribute that feat to the Prophet Hussein in the White House.  I just don't believe that the Prophet Hussein and his people don't have the talent or ability to pull off this flood....but someone else appears to have that ability.  Who is on the list of countries desiring to destabilize the US?

So yes, Mitch...you are right about "...is there a difference?".  I think clearly they are one in the same with the Iranians waging a proxy war in the Middle East with terrorists while focusing on destabilization in other areas around the globe.  They may be "mad mullahs" but they have a plan and influence.

I'm just sayin'.....
Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human freedom.
It is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves.

Back in the early 90's there was one report on CNN that Western intelligence agencies were tracking 2 Russian warheads that had been sold to Iran . That was back in the "wild West" days of the transition from communism when commanders were selling fuel, weapons, and anything else in order to not only line their pockets, but to just feed their troops. You could have bought a fully equipped sub for $200,000 if you had cash.
Only heard the report once must have been the Brits, they have the Official Secrets Act and "D" notices so they can shut down leaks far quicker than we do.
