Title: LCP- A PERSONAL REVIEW
Post by: THE CORONER on February 26, 2009, 08:50:15 AM
YEAH....
DON'T BE AFRAID TO BUY THE LCP.  I THINK ENOUGH HAS BEEN SAID ABOUT THE RECALL ON THIS GUN.  I'M SURE RUGER IS/HAS BEEN EMBARRASSED BY IT AS WELL.  I THINK THEY'RE DOING ALL THEY CAN TO SAVE FACE ON THIS ONE.  RUGER HAS IN MY OPINION ALWAYS BEEN A TRIED AND TRUE FIREARMS MANUFACTURER.  WITH THAT BEING SAID...

I WISH I HAD TWO OF THEM!

UPSIDE:
-EASY TAKE DOWN FOR CLEANING AND INSPECTION
-LIGHTWEIGHT OFCOURSE, FEELS LIKE A SQUIRT GUN!
-EXTREMELY SMALL, FRAME FOR EASY CONCEALMENT
-EXCEPTS CRIMSON TRACE LASER FOR TARGETING
-SNAPPY, YET NOT UNCONTROLABLE RECOIL
-HEAVIER TRIGGER PULL DESIGNED FOR SAFER OPERATION DUE TO NO ON-GUN SAFETY
-CHAMBERS .380 ACP.  WHILE NOT MY FIRST CHOICE FOR CCW; A CONFIDENT SELF DEFENSE CALIBER IN MY OPINION.
-MORE AND MORE AFTERMARKET ACCESSORIES ARE BECOMING AVAILABLE AS IT'S POPULARITY GROWS.
-BANG, BANG, BANG EVERYTIME WITH MINE!
-COST BETWEEN $250.00 PRE RECALL, AND $350.00-/$400.00 NOW.

DOWNSIDE:
-NEGATIVE FEEDBACK FROM KEL-TEC AND OTHER MANUFACTURED OWNERS.  PEOPLE ARE SOLD ON WHAT THEY LIKE.
-NOT LARGE ENOUGH CALIBER FOR MANY
-HARD TO FIND GUN RIGHT NOW DUE TO RECALL WORK.  GET ON THE LOCAL GUN STORE WAITING LIST.
-HARD TO FIND MAGAZINES DUE TO RECALL WORK.  RUGER IS GIVING RECALL OWNERS A FREE MAG RIGHT NOW.
MAGS AVAILABLE THROUGH RUGER, BUT THEY ARE PRICEY.  CALL AROUND TO LOCAL GUN STORES FIRST.  $20-$40
-HARD TO FIND AMMO DUE TO CALIBER POPULARITY.  TRY A GUN SHOW.  I FOUND SOME THERE IN FMJ ONLY.
-HIGH CAPACITY 10 RD. MAGAZINE WAS AVAILABLE BY PROMAG.  CAN'T FIND ONE ANYWHERE RIGHT NOW.
-POINT AND SHOOT FRONT SITE.  MAKES CRIMSON TRACE LASER A MUST BUY.  HOLSTER AVAILABLE TO ACCOMODATE.
-TOO HEAVY OF A TRIGGER PULL UNCOMFORTABLE FOR MOST PEOPLE.  I LIKE IT.  IT'S SMOOTH TO ME.

I LIKE THE LITTLE TOETAGGER MYSELF.  I HAD BEEN EYEING THE KEL-TEC MODEL, BUT WASN'T SOLD ON IT'S DEPENDABILITY BEFORE RUGER CAME OUT WITH THEIR LCP.  AT THIS POINT, FROM WHAT I'VE READ OVER FORUM AFTER FORUM; IT HAS BECOME PERSONAL PREFERENCE OVER WHICH IS THE BETTER GUN.  HOWEVER, I HAVE READ THAT NON BIAS TESTERS HAVE PICKED THE LCP OVER THE KELTEC MODEL 3 OUT OF 4 SHOOTERS.

BEFORE YOU BELIEVE ALL THE RHETORIC; PUT YOUR HANDS ON ONE.  SHOOT ONE IF YOU HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY.  SEE IF IT'S WHAT "YOU" WANT.  NOT WHAT EVERYONE ELSE WANTS, OR THINKS ABOUT THE LCP OR RUGER GUNS AS A WHOLE.

PEOPLE ARE AS DEDICATED TO A GUN MANUFACTURER AS THEY ARE TO AN AUTOMOBLIE MANUFACTURER.  BUY WHAT WORKS FOR YOU.

THIS IS MY OPINION ON THE LCP.  I'M NOT A GUN EXPERT.  I DON'T CLAIM TO BE.  THE GUN WORKS.  DESIGNED FOR CONCEALED CARRY, AND IS CALIBERED IN A ROUND I'M CONFIDENT WOULD GET A "WOULD BE ATTACKER'S" ATTENTION IF I SENT 2-3 ROUNDS AT THEM.  SOME LARGER FRAMED HANDGUNS IN ANY CALIBER JUST AREN'T COMFORTABLY CONCEALABLE FOR EVERYDAY CARRY.  I'M CONSTANTLY TRYING TO FIND ALTERNATIVE CARRY METHODS FOR MY .45.  THE LCP FITS THE POCKET HOLSTER EVERYDAY.

DOWNSIDE:
-LIMP WRIST SHOOTING MEANS JAMMING.  I THINK THIS IS TRUE FOR MOST SEMI-AUTOS IN BLOW BACK DESIGN.

Neither the LCP nor the 3AT use blow-back operation.

Yeah, locked breech design is what these are correct?

Nice job Coroner, better than the "I love this gun cuz Ruger advertises here!"  Stuff I have seen in the gun mags.

Recoil is sharp, but manageable. It's not an all afternoon plinker, but it fills its niche well.

I just bought 2 LCPs; one for me and one for my wife.  We shot 50 rounds each the other day and we were both happy with the guns.

I did try to load 6 + 1, by first loading the chamber manually and then inserting a full magazine.  But I found the magazine just wouldn't go all the way in.  What am I doing wrong?  How do I get a full 7 loaded into the gun at once?

I have no problem with this.  All my mags do have the finger extension that was furnished by Ruger.  It does not appear to add any capacity...surely not an additional round....but maybe it gives a few hundredths of extra clearance?

Try it in reverse? Chamber the round from the full mag, eject and then top it off. I had an old plastic .22 rifle back in the day that would only take it this way. I cannot think of a single mechanical reason why, but it just did.

Check to see if the mag floorplates are metal or plastic. I have both kinds, and the last round is a bear to insert in the mags with the plastic floorplate (spring binds on either the floorplate or the follower). Once I "wiggle" it a little...then the follower "snaps" past and allows the last round to be easily loaded. They function flawlessley once they are loaded. I also noticed the follower on the mag with the metal floorplate is "notched" out on one side.

Interestingly enough...the mag I received with the gun has a metal floorplate and notched follower, and both mags I bought from the GS have plastic floorplates and no notch (they came in a Ruger package). I have not taken apart the free post-recall mag to see how its put together.

I said all that, just to say this...once you get the mag loaded up with 6 rounds, make sure to press them down to ensure there is still some travel available with the follower.

Red Greene, used to love that show.  Is it still in production?

Ordered the DVD's of the Red Greene show a couple of years back for my boys. Took almost two months cause they came from Canada but it was well worth it.  ;D I know, not a gun topic.

Also, I thought I did respond on here about finally shooting the LCP? It shot very well. Had a little hiccup chambering a new round but did it slowly. I am pretty sure it was the round and not the LCP. All shots were on target and I did not have to compensate and guess where the round would hit. Have not had something so small and accurate as my old Beretta 950, .25 caliber but the LCP fits the bill.

Red Green is my hero. I gather its still around...but I haven't seen it in years. They used to run it on my local PBS station.

I sat in a managers meeting from 8 this morning until 4.....the place where we meet is two hours from my house but five minutes away from a really nice gun shop that we recently found.  I left the meeting at four and within 45 minutes was filling out the paperwork on the little bugger.

It makes the Walther PPK that was on my hip feel like forty pounds.

They're all my children though....I love them all equally.

One magazine, a zippered pouch, a PADLOCK that weighed as much as the gun, instructions.  That's about it.

Cool. Was wondering if I had been taken for a moment. Was able to get three mags, Desantis Holster, Padlock, manual, etc. I know they normally price out at $330, but they are hard to get around here. Mine actually had been previously owned and had 18 rounds through it. Thanks Green Mountains.  ;)

Took it to the range yesterday and first have to say, "Wow, that thing snaps sharply".  It kinda shows that .380 does pack a wallop despite the debate if it's enough caliber or not.

There isn't a lot of real estate to hold on to and that makes it move around in my hand a bit during recoil.  I think I need to add the available finger extension for the magazine though I don't want to add too much to the size as it'll defeat the whole purpose.

The trigger pull was long and smooth which is good considering the only safety is between your ears.

We put a mixture of FMJ's and HP's throug it with no issues, all fed perfectly.

As others have said, this is no all day plinker and wasn't built to be.  It was built for concealment and it sure is capable of that, which can help assure that it'll be with you when you need it.

I highly suggest the magazine pinky extension due to the recoil. Nice little pistol though.

+1 They don't prodrude enough to get in the way of anything, but they allow for a better purchase on the gun (although, not enough to get your pinky on there).

The mag extension actually fits me between my ring finger and pinky but still helps me stabilize the gun and keep it on target after recoil.

Just got around to firing some PD ammo.  Had my firts jam but then everything went smoothly.  My LCP really LOVES the MagTech 77grainers or maybe I should say I am able to shoot them better...not sure which.

Found some on eBay and they came today.  Haven't had the chance to fire with them but I can hook my ring finger around this extension and I'm sure I can get much better control and not have it slip sliding around.

I bought additional LCP mags (I have 5 total now) from Cheaper Than Dirt..but do not have the price.

I purchased extensions for all of them that needed them from TopGlock.com  - tgscom.com

I have another LCP on order from rugerlcp.com (another tgscom.com outfit) for $302.94

I have the Crimson Trace laser on my current LCP and will be getting one for the one on order.  My eyes aren't what they used to be and the whole dang gun is hard for me to pick up in low light, let alone the nubs used for sights.

The Nemesis holster from Desantis fits fine with the laser and I recommend the laser to anyone who can afford this option.

I'm going to take my LCP out tomorrow and see how it feeds the Hornady Critical Defense rounds.  I've already noticed one thing - it's a little tricky ejecting the chambered round - had it jam pretty tightly between the breech and the front of the port.

As only two boxes of ammo arrived, it will be a short test. About 3 mags... gawd bless supply and demand!  ;D

Finally got to play with one of these this week while taping a Subcompact Defense training DVD for my series. I REALLY Liked it. Order one already, in fact. We shot Speer Gold Dot and some Magsafe rounds through it and it never hiccup'd.... There is a "tap rack" shown in the DVD because I lost track of a round not being chambered between takes, and we'll leave the reaction/response in the final version.

I haven't carried a sub-caliber gun in years, but used to do it regularly. I could see myself carrying the LCP this summer as a slimmer option to the J-frame.

The only ammo my LCP had (minor) issues with was Fed HShok.  One or two FTF, but to be fair I had not really broken it all the way in yet.

Hornady's Critical Defense fed and fired like a champ today, nice ammo. this is also the first time I've fired the LCP with my new Pearce and  Ruger extensions and the CT laser.  The finger extension made a huge difference, and quite frankly the Pearce extension was superior to the Ruger w/ respect to control - it's just a little bigger.

The laser, eh. Apparently the laser's point of aim has moved up and right from when I first installed it. Maybe something to do with removing and replacing it for the recall.  I'll have to recheck the install and adjust it when I have time. No matter, I still shoot with the sights despite the little shiny dot.  :)

For those interested, here's a link for discounted LCP accessories, including the laser for $159 (msrp is $209) and the Pearce extensions, 2 for $13. You must sign up for the forum to receive the discounted prices, no big deal. Link for the forum is on the shop page near the top.
