Actually, the earliest bank robbery in America occured at The Bank of Pennsylvania at Carpenters Hall in 1798. It also saw the beginning of one of the first successful civil suits for false imprisonment, filed by Pat Lyon who was unjustly accused of the crime.

Yeah, its actually kind of a big deal (bank robbery aside), as it set a precedent for suing the government for false imprisonment, even if they acted in good faith.
