Tell me where my theory might be wrong - Going Suppressed
« on: March 11, 2013, 08:13:28 AM »
I am i the early stages of establishing an NFA Trust to buy a supressor(s.)  Budget-wise, I just found that you can buy threaded barrels so no need ot buy a new gun equipped with a threaded barrel (mixed feelings about that.)  Anyway, it seems like I can buy an oversize can, say a .45, and then use it on smaller calibers like the .40 and 9mm. As long as it is on a pistol I am good going smaller.  Is this correct?  Will a .45 can work just as well over a 9mm barrel?
Also, it seems like there are different thread size options, how difficult would it be to get something universal, or are adapters needed/available?
Was hoping to get some feedback or suggestions from those more knowledgable.

However you will never get as good of suppression with a smaller caliber than the can was designed for. This is because the smaller bullet allows more gas to escape and therefore a louder report.
Also, it seems like there are different thread size options, how difficult would it be to get something universal, or are adapters needed/available?  From what I have seen, most manufacturers make adapters. But I would caution against using an adapter unless you absolutely have to. It creates one more connection and one more potential place for mis-alignment.

The only suppressor that I use on multiple calibers is my Gemtech Halo. I use it for 5.56, I also use it on my .22 upper. I also have a Blackside .40, but I have never tried it on a 9mm so I cannot attest to practical function on smaller calibers. Then again, I'm terrified of baffle strikes.

Thank you!  What are baffle strikes?

A baffle strike is just what you think it is.
When the bullet hits the baffle inside the can and rips the guts out of your suppressor.

Been lucky so far. (Knocking on wood, crossing my fingers and hoping that karma likes me.) But I'm very picky about the ammo I use through my suppressor. However I have seen it happen, and it'll ruin your whole day.

Not owning a suppressor, what diff would the ammo make?
Other than being too fast to avoid sonic signature, what are the other considerations?

The owners manual that came with mine were VERY clear and redundant that you should only use FMJ. I'm sure that they are just covering their butts, but I don't want to chance it. Between the time and expense, not to mention the paperwork involved, I don't want to have the hassle of replacement. This may be obsolete in newer designs or different manufacturers. For the record, both of my cans are Gemtech. One is a HALO, the other is a Blackside.  Both were purchased more than 5 years ago.

I know that Gemtech sells subsonic ammo that they recommend for their suppressors. I have never used subsonic, but have still been very impressed with the noise reduction. It makes my 5.56 sound like a long barrel .22 rifle, and the pistol sounds about like an air rifle.

The possiblility of vaporized lead and esp. lube being pasted all over everything again and again and a lazy shooter not cleaning it.
I get why they, and you, wouldn't want that to happen.

I'd love to get a suppressor but them babies is spensive!

Spensive is right, but.....
NFA Trust - $650
Suppressor - $599
Tax Stamp - $200
Threaded Barrel - $225
Exercising your right to keep and bear arms without infringement, not getting fingerprinted and doing it without a letter of permission from your Chief Law Enforcement officer - Priceless!
