Self Defense Handgun For Handycaped Shooter
« on: April 17, 2013, 09:17:21 PM »
My sister has had limited use of her "support" hand for a number of years.  This condition is not going to get much better. She can hold light objects if placed in her hand with her dominant left hand.  She has no experience with any firearm and would like to learn.

Q: Thoughts on a gun to start her out with.  (I have a couple of ideas but wanted to hear from everyone first.)

Can she grasp a slide enough to rack a slide?    if not that means wheel gun, the details are going to depend on what she can and can not do.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

If she can't work a slide, and is restricted to a revolver I would suggest the .327 Federal .
Because pistols in that caliber will chamber ANY rimmed .32 cartridge it would allow tailoring the recoil to her ability.
From a .32 short, up to full house .327 federal.

I would think a revolver would be a good choice as you do not have to be concerned about limp wrist failures. Balance weight and recoil to fit the shooter. .38 special in a mid sized steel frame are a good place to start. Put a CT laser grip on for ease of aiming and to increase confidence.

That should make Feinstein really happy. How many days before that gets added to the list!

Interesting idea certainly would add stability. I have to say that showing the guy in the tree stand to prove it was a hunting device was kind of a reach. Might be useful for a car gun.
