I deal with alot of LEOs on a professional level, mainly to file police reports and evict people.( not so much more as I sold the property mangment company)  Add in my contact with officers that is not work related.  9 out of 10 of the LEOs I've been in contact with are complete ass holes.  Now there has been one agency that has been the expection.  The CHP, I have never had a incounter with them where the officer did not act in a professional maner. I've also had CHP officers bend over backwards to help me out.  every single time I've at the very least written letters to thier COs saying how pleased I was in thier professionalizm.  twice I've catered lunch for thier entire field office.
I always break all the clay pigeons,  some times its even with lead.

When I was a kid some cops beat one of my neighbors in the kidneys so bad he peed blood for days. They were careful not to leave a mark on him and got away with it. He was a really nice guy too and he became a minister after that. That was one of the first things that made me think cops aren't any good. It seems like the biggest difference between cops and criminals is a badge. Of course there are good cops too but I rarely ever see one.
""It may be laid down as a primary position, and the basis of our system, that every Citizen who enjoys the protection of a free Government, owes not only a proportion of his property, but even his personal services to the defence of it, and consequently that the Citizens of America (with a few legal and official exceptions) from 18 to 50 Years of Age should be borne on the Militia Rolls, provided with uniform Arms, and so far accustomed to the use of them, that the Total strength of the Country might be called forth at a Short Notice on any very interesting Emergency." - George Washington. I get crap on this forum all the time for being a college professor. It seems every other poster has had a bad experience once and it somehow means we are all scum bags. Like you, I work my ass off and consistenly get good studnt evals and peer reviews. Like you I resent it. BUT there are a number of lazy incompetant jerks in my profession who will occasionally abuse their power. Its the same in yours. These are the ones folks remember. You shoud be pissed by the criticism, just not by the critic. You should be pissed at the ones who caused the problem in the first place. I had someone I thought of as a friend in grad school who was giving a girl a passing grade so she could keep her scholarship, on the condition she slept with him. He told me this and after getting him to give me her name, we were on about beer 9 at this point, he did. I turned him in the next day. I don't regret it either. You don't lie, cheat or steal or tolerate those who do, because if you do, they tarnish your rep by their actions. If more cops did this, and turned in abusive officers fewer people would hate cops. Just my .02.

Being one of the ones who dump on you I will say 2 things, first it isn't because "your a college Professor" , It's be cause I don't agree with many of your views based on my own reading and observations.
Second, your post sums up the point quite nicely.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

I'm beginning to worry about BO, yesterday with  The "asshole and the Officer". Now I've heard he's going to split a Keg with Michael Vick and a Pit Bull.

My $0.02

Most units, departments and organizations reflect their leadership or lack of the same.

If your department is headed by someone who is political, constantly practicing CYA, you better expect the rank and file will do the same.

If your unit does the bare minimum of training and practice because it too costly, no time, not my job, you end up with the majority of barely trained employees.

If you have an old boys, us against them department, you'll see a double standard of behavior ingrained into the culture.

If you have outstanding leadership with a little management, you have people who will act and behave in a professional manner.

Ultimately it's up to the individual to live up to a set of personal standards but any organization that demands integrity from everybody will be something to be proud of.

Jumbofrank, I'm sorry your neighbor had an issue but that's a rarity in my experience.

My view - 80% good guys, 10% clueless, 10% in it for themselves.
