I know there is a Bogan River in Australia, so I'm a little offended but a lot curious.

Sorry Tom my heart felt apologies, my reference to bogan is no utterence towards you good families name.
As Phil has pointed out it is a common everyday name used to to describe dreggs of our society, why or how it became to be known as "bogan" is not known or lost over the eons of time.
If however you moved to here it would be a good idea however to change your surname by depol
