Doctors will prescribe kids with ADHD medical marjiuana in California

Do you think it's OK for doctors to do this?

Hey, hyperactive kids, in California you can get stoned -- legally. California doctors are now recommending marijuana to children diagnosed with attention hyperactivity disorder, Sphere reports.

Since 2004, California has given out more than 36,000 medical marijuana cards.  The number of these cards going to children - it appears that all of the known cases are teenagers - is not known, as doctors are not required to report medical marijuana cases.

However, experts say medical marijuana cards going to minors are on the rise.  Parents must accompany children under 18 requesting medical marijuana to this doctor's appointment, the New York Times reports.

Even with this precaution, the fact that children can get medical marijuana is creating quite a controversy.

"Let me count the ways in which prescribing marijuana for teens with ADHD is a bad idea," Stephen Hinshaw, professor of psychology at the University of California at Berkeley, told Sphere.

"The active ingredient in pot, THC, causes short-term memory problems and inattention, the very same things you want a medicine for ADHD to help alleviate," Hinshaw said.

Others have fewer qualms about giving a kid with ADHD some pot.

"I'd have no hesitation giving a youngster with ADHD a trial of oral marijuana," Lester Grinspoon, emeritus professor of psychiatry at Harvard Medical School and author of "Marijuana: The Forbidden Medicine," told Sphere.

"For some kids, it appears to be more effective than traditional treatments. And marijuana certainly has fewer potential dangers than Ritalin."

"My son was diagnosed with ADHD when he was 6," a Grass Valley, Calif., woman who wished to remain anonymous told Sphere. "He was hyperactive and had trouble in school, but we didn't want to put him on Ritalin. Too many side effects. When he got to high school, I suddenly noticed that he'd calmed and could concentrate. I couldn't figure it out. Then he told me that he'd started smoking pot."

Actually it makes perfect sense considering the effects of pot. Would I want my 6 year old smoking weed ? Of course not, but it illustrates the useful effects of the NATURAL compound instead of the chemical Ritalin.
There is however another treatment for "ADHD", it's called a "kick in the ass".
You ever notice that this was never a problem back when children were disciplined with more than a "time out" ?

Funny, how my Father's belt, and mother's wooden spoon, cured me of the same ailment when I was a kid...

I agree with you on all counts.

I have a hunch that ADHD scripts will SOAR and most of the kids will have to "share with momma"

Hey if we dose them with meth maybe they will not be lazy and obese, that will get rid of the overweight kids. Try tanning their bottoms and making them mind, and stop blaming it on every thing else. Lazy parenting skills. Let me tell you that if my wife calls and I have to come home from work to deal with a unruly child, they know better.

50 years of socialist "hail the sacred child " bull$hit is the problem.
Until WWII children were held to the same standards of behavior as adults and we were a great nation.
They have been increasingly pampered ever since and we have a nation of fat lazy tattooed, undisciplined knowit alls running around expecting a hand out with so many piercings they look like they fell into a tackle box.

Of course there's cases where that was true wit the Ritalin, too.

As did mine, beatings never happened but a good ol spanking did the job.  ;)   The wife and I did the same to our 3 boys.

Very true, at the time, I thought I was being beaten, but now I know I deserved each "life's lesson" 95.2% of the time.

Oh, and this hurts me more than it does you,...????? I never heard that... :-\
