I have an xd-9 in four inch, and have used friends four and five inch in .45.  Absolutely love mine, and can't say that theirs are any different outside of the recoil.  Only reason I bought the  9mm is that I have a 1911, 2011 and revolver all in .45acp, a nice .40s&w, and didn't have any 9mm.  The only thing I would suggest is check if you like the thicker grip on the .45.  I have large hands, but am so used to the 1911 and my heavily comped 2011, that the thicker grip didn't feel good with the heavier recoil.

IF you don't like it, I'll give you $10 for it.

Heck, make that $20.

 ;D

I have the 5" compact and love it. I have small hands, but I was used to my GLOCK30.

I want a 4" compact. Bad

I have an XD 40, and love it, and after talking with a couple of LE friends, I wish I had the .45 too.  Their biggest compliments were to the versatility with the different mags (they had the compact models) I think you will do well with the .45.

I have a 4in XD 9 that I like alot.  It shoots great so I bought the 5 in XD45. I have not been sorry.  The compact would be to small for me to wield correctly.

Find a gun shop/range that has one for rental. Shoot 200 rounds through it. Then decide. If you can't find one to rent just make sure the gun fits your hand. Ask the merchant to let you work the slide, try the trigger (more than once), then hand over your credit card...

They are good guns. I've shot several and owned a XD .40 4in. I'm a huge Glock fan and for me I could shoot the Glock more accurately than the xd's. However, in all other regards they are as good as any other polymer pistol out there. Throw in the Smith & Wesson M&P and I would say that those are the three best polyers for the $600 and under range.

I have XD9 in 4inch and 5inch and love them both.  I use the 5inch for USPSA and 3 Gun and the 4inch for IDPA and is also my carry gun.
