a .44 mag is a powerfull handgun, and in the right hands you see what can happen. Wonder what Hornady round he was using ?

Just like almost everything else these days...don't need one, would like to have one,  can't afford it right now.  Bears reported around the area so it could be very useful with heavy loads and fun with lighter loads.

When it was first introduced back in the 30's One guy (I forget his name) took one of EVERY game animal in North America with a .357 Magnum. And that works for concealed carry a lot better than the .44 too.

The .44 Mag is a fine catridge but hyped too much by the press and movies.

Most cannot hit with it since they fear the recoil.

Some carry it around here for bears but I'd pack a 10mm Glock to give me time to get to either my 12 ga pump with 00 buck or slugs or my Marlin 45-70.

The GLOCK packs a few more rounds than the revolver ( which is true for the 450 and 460 ) and loaded right will protect you.

1935
Major Douglas Wesson

Antelope - 200 yards (2 shots)

Elk - 130 yards (1 shot)

Moose - 100 yards (1 shot)

Grizzly Bear - 135 yards (1 shot)

The Antelope was hit the first time at 125 yards. It ran, stopped and was shot the second time at 200 yards. The second shot killed it.

The Bull Elk was killed with one shot through the lungs.

The Moose was shot in the chest near the base of the neck. It cut the 2nd rib, passed through both lungs, sheared the 8th rib on the off side and stopped just under the hide.  No follow-up shot was required.

These animals were taken on a Fall hunt in Wyoming, near the West entrance of Yellowstone Park.  The Grizzly was taken later in Canada.

The  above game was taken using factory loads which were a 158 gr. bullet at 1515 fps from an 8 3/4" barreled S&W producing 812 ft. lbs  of muzzle energy. (S&W later shortened the barrels to 8 3/8" as we have today)

To those who criticized, the Major replied that they "..had not the slightest conception of what we have accomplished in ballistics.." - a statement that still applies today.

How do you get a 44mag, let alone a handgun, into Australia?

In the right hands, with the right loads, recoil is not that bad. Model 29. Yes, that one,... ;D

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."

I'm a big fan of the 300 grn Xtp, and the 320 gascheck big meplat bullets at 1200 - 1300 fps, much better recoil than the barn burner 180's and 240's, and so far completely accurate, 2" at 50 yds and if you can hold her 4" at 100 yds, this is a 5" barrel model 29 classic hunter.

How handy, very handy, compared to what exactly I don't know what your asking, not disagreeing, my .41 mag 4" is very handy as well.

I like the 10mm, but heavy bullets have become my thing, over the years, If I go to big bear country, the heavy projectile revolver will probably be what I carry on the hip. And yes to get to my 12 gauge or rifle, certainly hope the first volley does not make me run too far to get either.

Good video though.
