other then bear defence, I can't think of another reason to get one.  Yeah there is the want factor, but I'm past that stage in my gun buying.  a 357, is more then powerful enough to kill any game animal I might hunt.

Handy because of its sheer versatility...a downloaded version at .44 Special velocities is a legendary self-defense cartridge...hotted up, it can be used to cap a velociraptor. It tends to be a surprisingly forgiving cartridge when reloading...hard to find a round that won't shoot well.

It I had to run out of the house with one and only one handgun, it'd be a .44 Magnum...

+1 on all that.  ;)

You can load it light enough to match .45 ACP velocities, or hot enough to mash a moose.  Either way I believe it's reputation for recoil is far worse than the reality of it.  That said, I'm sure if one were to choose a little titainium snubby with wood grips just specifically to punish themselves, it'd be up that task to.  ;D

For me.  Hornady XTP's (180-300grain), Winchester brass, Federal match primers, and Hodges H110 make for all kinds of .44 mag fun!   ;D ;D ;D

The video was just fun (even the fourth time I watched it). :)

When is Ruger going to bless us with a modern semi-auto carbine in this caliber?!?!?   On my wish list would be the rotary magazine from their bolt gun, a decent laminat, or synthetic stock (not like the bolt gun), a MUCH simplified trigger mechanism / action than that of the "Deerslayer", and a barrel that can be changed out by the end user.  Look at the success the 10/22 has enjoyed with these things!

Personally I don't think the recoil from a .44 mag with 240 grain factory loads is too bad from a 5 and half inch barreled  Ruger Redhawk or a 6 and a half inch barreled Vaquero.  I have not shot any heavier round though.

A little bigger than a .44 mag, but this was a great shot.  176 yard shot on a Grizzley from a custom .475 Linebaugh revelover.

Dustin Linebaugh took a lot of flack on some of the forums for taking this shot, but in my opinion he new what he was doing and more than capable of making the shot.

The only .44 mag that I've had a lot of experience with is my Super Blackhawk Hunter.  I used it to hunt black bear, in Maine, a few years ago and fired a lot of rounds of different weights and powder charges.  I did upgrade to Hogue grips, instead of the cool looking grey wood grips, since I have big hands, but had no trouble whatsoever with recoil. (Even when firing one handed.)  The .44 mag, in my opinion, has a more comfortable "push" recoil instead of a "snap", which I find harder to control for follow up shots.  I'm a huge fan of .45s, but like MB, if I had to choose one handgun, the combination of accuracy and power would make the .44 mag my only choice out of the calibers I have experience with.

A friend of mine kept telling me to get a .44 mag and eventually I picked up my 4" 629. I love shooting it and carry it out hunting with me. My dad liked it so much he picked up a 6" for taking to Alaska. As for versality, my mom loves shooting the .44 special cowboy loads with it. I also find the recoil is different from my .357. Reloading is what makes the .44 Mag really shine.
