I have talked to instructors from many parts of the country, and everyone from larger cities say the same thing - "We have lots of girls taking the class, because for babysitting firearm safety looks as good as cpr." Parents want to know that if their children either find a gun in the house, or a visitor brings a gun into the house the sitter knows what to do.
I add to this that I want to take the mystery out of guns. I have a wide variety, and the students get to handle everyone of them, and we try to let them shoot some ... within reason. I'm not going to have a bunch of 12 year olds shooting the 500 or a 300 wsm, but there is no reason they can't shoot the 1911 in .22lr, the .22 revolvers, an ar-15 (in either .223 or .22lr), or a .17hmr. When kids finish our class they understand safety, and mystery has been replaced by "been there done that."
Maybe we should take the same stance on guns as some do on sex, and we can start handing out free ammo in the school hallways
