If it looks stupid but works its not stupid.

I think the question about whether her "trained" to do that is very valid.. in fact, it needs to be answered before any speculation on why he did is valid.

We know that one handed actions are more intuitive when we operate at extension.

As for what we should do, if you CAN use two hands to control the gun, both alignment, and more importantly: recoil, I think you should. If you can't, then, by definition, it will be because there is something else going on with the other hand... which means that there is little value in planning on what to do with it if you are not using it to help the shooting. The circumstances will dictate.

Back in the first days of NC becoming a CCW State, my instructor, was retired old school LEO from the New England area, and demonstrated this "hand over heart" drill, along with weak hand drills. Not every shooting situation is going to be a "standard" two handed "just like at the range" stance.

This old school technique, was way before bullet proof vests.  Maybe this officer wasn't wearing one, maybe he was just deferring to his training from 17 years on the force.

Doesn't matter. BG down was the result. Old military manuals show a traditional pistol shooting stance, bladed stance one handed.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.
