School says Jesus on cross “violent image”

One eight-year-old in Taunton just learned a valuable lesson in political correctness, and a school district may wind up learning a little something about free speech, religious expression, and not asking questions to which one does not want to hear the answers.  An elementary school student was asked to draw something that reminded him of Christmas.  When he drew a picture of Jesus on a crucifix, the teacher and the administration recoiled in horror at the “violent image.”  No, really:

   

An eight year old elementary school student in Taunton was sent home from school and required to undergo a psychological evaluation after drawing a stick figure picture of Jesus on the cross.

    The  second grader at Maxham Elementary school was told by this teacher that the drawing was violent.  This was after the class was asked to sketch something that reminded them of Christmas. …

    The father tells the “Taunton Gazette” because his son put Xs  on the eyes of Jesus, the teacher thought it was violent.

But he drew Jesus with a smile!  Doesn’t that count for anything?

It’s hard to imagine a more clueless, knee-jerk response than the one given by this school.  First, Jesus on a crucifix has been a symbol of Christianity for two millenia.  Since Christmas is in fact a Christian holiday, at least nominally, the crucifix in this drawing clearly came from Christian symbolism and not some latent threat of a reenactment of the last scenes of Spartacus from a second grader. How dense or deliberately obtuse must a teacher and administrators be not to understand the symbolism involved in this drawing?

The story does end on a happy note.  The father of the student has been given permission for his child to attend another school in the district.  They should have transferred the teacher and the administrators instead, preferably to quiet rooms with as little contact with children as possible.  The real threat here is that the gross stupidity will infect the students.

This stuff is SO common in every day New England life, it happens all the time.  

School districts and the states up here are constantly trying to get parents to bend to the will of the district when it comes to moral and religious freedoms and expression.  I've learned to ignore and thank the Good Lord that I have no more kids in the system.  What education my daughter recieved from the state of MA was horrendous and she was ill equiped to become a productive member of society.

Thank God she has a good brain and parents that wouldn't take this crap on the chin.  I've been asked to leave a few school board functions because I asked the questions they didn't want to answer.

The crucifixion of Jesus was violent!  He was illegally murdered for what he represented to the worldly leaders, and in doing so he fulfilled his Father's pan.  Obviously this student understands things better than those charged with overseeing his education

I totally agree with M58, it was violent, but because of that act of violence peace entered this world.  That act of violence also was an act of mercy. 

When crusifixion was  performed on criminals was also an act of justice

Not even Rhode Island is that stupid, well,...let me rethink that one,....

I guess watching Power Rangers, or Spongebob, or any other show geared for an 8 year old could be violent....

I caught an episode with a friends kids about that age of Dora The Explorer having to smack an alligator.

What absolute barbarism!!!!

That kid needs a better and more worthy school than the one currently enrolled in.

Update:

More information to consider....this child, the day before, had visited the LaSallet Shrine in Attleboro, MA.  It's a Catholic shrine, gift shop and Church run by some local Friars.  It's really quite lovely this time of year because they do the whole place up with Christmas decorations and have a 1/2 mile long (about) nature walk through the property with all the lights.

It's free to anyone who want's to visit, donations are welcome.

Anyway, long story short....The Crucifix and Jesus were fresh on the mind of this young person.

The school board required an evaluation by a clinical physcologist before he would be admited back to school.

Pure BS.....
