Concealed Carry in Phoenix?

First of all, I'm new to the forums.  This topic may have been covered many other times.  Really, I just need to get some feedback.  Here's the situation:

I live in Washington (state).  I have a buddy getting married this weekend in Phoenix, AZ.  I'm flying down for the weekend.  Here's my question(s):  Do I pack my carry gun, etc...or spend a couple of days in/around Phx unarmed?  I know my WA ccw permit is recognized by AZ...  I guess I'm wondering if anyone might have any reasons why I should NOT plan to carry while I'm in town?  It also would effect whether or not I check a bag or not, obviously.

I suppose I could just borrow a 1911 if nothing else...?

Sort of just thinking out loud (online) here...

The easiest thing would be to borrow a gun while there.... then you dont have to worry about the flight

Take your own gun! Checking a gun in your luggage isn't that difficult. Borrowing one from a friend could lead to legal problems for your friend if you have to use it!

Call ahead to your airline and find out what their requirements are, Then call TSA and find out what theirs are.

Not really. I've done it several times. Adds a couple of minutes to the checkin process that's all. I suppose you could get tired of it if you fly allot, but I like having MY OWN firearms handy!!!

The last time I flew with a gun a gun (pre-911) it wasn't a hassel. The airline regs haven't changed, (though enforcement might have). The deal is that you have to check your gun at the counter in a locked case without ammo. The clerk then puts a sticker on it and in theory you're good to go. You can carry ammo in a seperate locked case. Personally, unless your friend lives in a high crime neighborhood, I'd just take my chances or borrow a gun rather than trusting my pistol to the airlines. In my expeerience, ANYTHING you check should be considered disposable.

I have flown with guns several times, and it is not that difficult.  Check out the airlines rules and TSA rules ahead of time, follow the rules to a T, and it will be no worse than any other flight you have ever taken.  In several trips the only issue I had was when one airline "small man" decided I had too many guns in one case.  I had four guns in four guns in one case; he said that I could put a max of two in a single case; he also said I should put the case inside a suitcase or duffel bag, and that it was ok to put all gun cases in the same duffel; and that TSA should not have allowed me to check them through that way; but he backed down when I held out my "X" airline rule sheets and told him I had flown out there that way.

Pack your gun, pack your ammo, pack your holster, and have a good trip!

The process is fairly standard no more than 3 long guns or 5 handguns in a case. Biggest variance in policy is the ammo. Between 2-3 hundred rounds per person or with some airlines up to 11 pounds per person. and so far no one has asked how much ammo I packed. When you arrive at the airport Declare an unloaded firearm to the checkin clerk. Fill in the tag they give you. proceed to the TSA inspection point (they'll point you to it). TSA checks your Firearms you lock the case (keep the key) and you done! You can get the policies for your airline on their websites!

Thanks, everyone for the help!  I've transported back and forth to Alaska a couple of times, and I'm flying the same airline to PHX, so shouldn't be any bigger of a deal than any other time.
