A NEW SOUTH WALES man who died after being shot by police on Christmas Day was helpful and "would do anything for anybody'', a neighbour says.

The man, aged in his 40s, was wounded when a number of shots were fired by police who had gone to The Rise, Lisarow, shortly after 4.30pm (AEDT) on Friday after reports of a neighbourhood dispute.

He was treated by paramedics but later died at Gosford Hospital, on the state's central coast.

"Officers were confronted by a man ... who was allegedly armed with a knife and behaving in a threatening manner,'' police said in a statement.

Neighbours who knew the man said they were distraught and felt sympathy for his family.

One neighbour said the man had lived in the street for more than ten years and would often help people with gardening and odd jobs.

"It's terrible that it happened ... he would do anything for anybody,'' he said.

A critical incident investigation team of homicide squad officers has been formed to examine the circumstances of the shooting.

Hmmmmm, what actions did the deceased do to provoke a lethal reaction by the police?

Seems the media will always say "He was a Good Man",.... but evidently the result seems different to whether he was good or not.

"Armed with a knife", "threatening manner", not obeying the commands of law enforcement WILL get you shot.

I'm sure some would have preferred he was "tazed" and given the professional help he needed so badly,......

Watch out, this may be a provocation to make police given "non lethal" weapons,,....bean bag 12g, etc,.....

IMO   Wave a knife (or gun, or axe, or baseball bat etc..) at a cop and get shot...
looks like another case of Suicide by Cop

I feel sorry for the cop whose christmas was buggered.  also  feel sorry for the family of this bloke as it wasnt their fault, I do feel more for the coppers though

A MAN shot dead by police on Christmas Day during a heated stand-off was linked to the Rebels motorcycle gang.

Ian Saunders Cowie, aged in his 40s, was shot three times in front of his family on Friday after threatening police with a knife at his home in The Rise, at Lisarow on the NSW Central Coast.

Mr Cowie's adult daughters, Jane and Rebecca, watched as their father was shot by police who had cornered him in the garage.

Paramedics tried to revive Mr Cowie and took him to Gosford Hospital but he died from his injuries.

Two senior constables and a female probationary constable were called to the house about 4.30pm by Michael, a next-door neighbour.

Neighbours claimed Mr Cowie had been drunk and, for reasons that are still unclear, was pelting Michael's house and car with small rocks.

Police said yesterday the situation had escalated when Mr Cowie drew a knife and turned on the officers, who attempted to subdue him with a baton and capsicum spray.

Although one of the officers was trained to use a Taser gun, he was not carrying one.

Homicide Squad detectives have formed a strike force, code-named Sindone, to investigate the incident.

Acting Assistant Commissioner Geoff McKechnie said the bullets were fired by the senior constables, who felt the use of force was necessary to protect themselves.

"Every aspect of what happened... will be covered in the (investigative) process." Mr McKechnie said.

It was the fifth fatal shooting by NSW police this year.

A senior police source confirmed yesterday that Mr Cowie had been known to authorities and was an associate of the Rebels bike gang.

"He has links to the gang, but we don't think he's a member," the source said.

Mr Cowie is understood to have had a falling-out with the group three years ago after allegedly having an affair with a gang member's partner.

At the height of his feud with the Rebels, Mr Cowie, who had a mental illness, tried to hang himself but was stopped by family members.

"They had to cut him down from the noose," the neighbour said.

"He went away for a year to a facility. Everyone was shocked when she (his wife Wendy) took him back."

Residents said Mr Cowie was known as a "problem".

"His problems escalated in the last few years," a neighbour said.

"People kept their distance."

As you approach 50, any mental issues tend to intensify, then level off.  My brother suffered from depression from his teen years on and finally ended his life at 42.

I'd say this incident was definitely suicide by cop. Pretty amazing how the perp went from 'nice guy' to 'people kept their distance'.
