« on: December 29, 2009, 11:47:23 PM »
found a gun forum here in Peru and one of the guys has an OLD revolver. no markings. wants to restore it and find out what the heck it is. apparently it's been in the family (some box in storage) since probably the 1890s.

???  maybe a Webley .38 Revolver

Dead ringer for almost every S&W break top I've ever seen, especially the are around the hinge pin. Maybe a knock-off or perhaps the real thing.

I've never seen nickel plate on a Webley, although I am nowhere even close to an expert on them.

Any idea what caliber?

With no markings I would say it is probably a local copy of something like the S&W but that is just a WAG

Didn't the Spanish make a lot of S&W knockoffs that were not marked?

Yes, a lot of the modern manufacturers started that way in Eibar, like LLama and Star

I compared your pictures to the Meriden I just refinished. The pin arrangement of the Meriden is missing on your revolver and the trigger mechanism is completely different. The Spainish copies of the S&W top breaks were usually marked, but Belguim made copies weren't always marked. That way they could be sold as the real thing. Is there an access plate on the other side of the frame or do the guts come out when you remove the trigger? See if you can get some more info.
