Why Do People "Paint" Firearms ?
« on: January 03, 2010, 07:58:09 AM »

This seems to be a new fad that I've never come to understand. I understand that paint will allow you to achieve certain camo patterns that you otherwise would not be able to, but it lacks any and all durability. This photo shows exactly what I'm talking about. That gun is an expensive Sig Sauer that looks like total crap. I've seen "sniper rifles" that look far worse.

There are several durable finishes designed specifically for firearms that can achieve much the same thing with far better durability. Robar here in Phoenix has some of the best. I just don't understand the logic of rattle canning a $1,000.00+ handgun with a $2.00 can of Krylon, anymore than I could understand someone brush painting a Corvette with the latest semi gloss Acrylic from Dunn Edwards. Paint belongs on houses, not guns.  Bill T.

I don't get it either. I mean why would you pay extra to have a cammo duracoat finish on a shotgun? Do you really think it makes you more stealthy? I mean if everything in is in a matte finsh, you're fine. If your target is close enough to see the gun its close enough to be shot. I guess I can see anodizing a range toy in pink or blue just for the sake of whimsy, but getting out a can of spray paint? No, and make that a hell no.

I think it stems from the use of spray paints in the military...... The rise of duracoat shows what a demand there is for it.... On the one hand, about an hour and a fresh coat of paint and it will look freshly painted again but I agree, if you are gonna do it, then do it right and use the good stuff.

I don't 'paint' my firearms, but I'm not very fond of the 'tactical' black.  That's why i"ve got a an OD XD.  changed the furnature on my coyote rifle, well I wanted rails and ordered the forage green from Magpul.  I'm an individual and I don't want to be like everyone else.  I have a Stainless steel 1911 with different grips so as to show my personality.

That is why I have I like the colors, if you don't I'll respect your opinion.

I would deserve to be laughed at if it were pink

I have a buddy that has been Duracoating his guns. They look pretty good. He does his because if he even looks at a blued gun it starts to rust. Duracoat gives his guns a fighting chance against him.

He's not doing any crazy colors or anything, usually just black.

It's also easier to do the painting at home by yourself (though some of the results show some people shouldn't) than taking your gun to a gunsmith and having it reblued.
