Okie dokie folks, the motivation for me splitting this thread off from the "Michael Bane on the History Channel" thread is so that we can try to focus on the things the Rudy did right or were positives.

It really is just all too easy to sit back and armchair or Monday morning quarterback him and the show and focus on the negatives and the "Well, this is what I would have done differently...." comments.

Me?  Literally right off the top of my head, he was wearing a hooded jacket or sweatshirt.  I forgot what X percentage of your body heat escapes through your head and the back of your neck, but I thought it was a good idea that he was wearing that.  It's been like 5*F here near St. Louis and having a hoodie on helps.  It kinda keeps your ears warm too without restricting the outside noise all that much vs. say ear muffs...or an Elmer Fudd hat.

Second, he was wearing dark clothes.  Yeah, you would think it would be common sense to NOT wear pink neon clothes, but I thought that was a good idea that he was wearing black.  Just from a visual detection/camo aspect.  The other thing it does is it hides the dirt. 

So....what were the positive things he did in his show?

Haven't seen it yet, but want to. I think the hoody was a good idea as 10% of body heat goes through the head. However, (not a critique Tyler, just a sugestion) is to avoid a cotton sweat shirt. Go fleeceor better yet wool if you can. I worked for years at an outfitters and I do know my outdoor fabrics. Cotton sucks. It gets wet and stays wet and has almost zero insulation when it is. Fleece maintains about 30% when wet, and wool is better, particularly untreated wool if you can find it like old school Irish fisherman's sweaters (you'll smell like a sheep, but the lanolin will keep you warm and dry) . Gore tex fleece is mo' better. I have a jacket from browning in this in dark green, and it was my go to bow hunting option as it was whisper quiet and still kept me dry. As far as a hoody? I paid ten whole dollars for an olive drab fleece one at Old Navy  when they were moving the spring fashions in. Looks like cotton, just a lot more practical. Just a thought.

While FQ is right about heat retention qualities of different wet materials I have to agree with Tyler on the hoodie.
I usually wear a hat and scarf, but I got 2 Hoodies for Christmas and I find that they keep me warmer than the hat / scarf combo.
And the hood can simply be pushed back or pulled up, you do not have to consider stowage for it as it's always there.

using the sewer to move and how to get a sewer cover off, the fire starting with a 9 volt on the steel wool, also using the library and the hospital for power. Some real good points that most would not think of.
On the other hand like the other show you need to stay ahead of the curve and get out of a big city instantly. Your chance of survival in a big city, is slim unless your the only one there. Most dont realize that a pre 80s vehicle will probably be run with points and rotor and will not be effected by a EMP, so have a good ole ride or find one.

I was half dozing last night on the sofa and had the TV on.  I heard that voice of the Future Weapons guy, and I woke up.  On the show he was hosting last night, he was concentrating on focused energy weapons.

One of which was....wait for it... EMP.

He interviewed a guy by the name of Fred Levien (google his name).  He is some sort of EMP expert.

Anyway, during the interview, ol' Fred there went on to say that the former Soviets were known to have EMP weapons and had scaled them down to the size of a soda can.

Now, he didn't go on to say what kind of power that would put out or what kind of range that would have.

Fred went on to speculate that with the demise of the old Soviet Union he reckons that some of these EMP weapons probably sprouted legs and walked off.

In a way, it is kinda scarey what EMP can do.  I remember back to at least 10 years ago, I think it was either Leslie Stahl or Diane Sawyer who did a special on a "focused energy device" that could be aimed at cars to disable themor could be aimed at a person on a respirator in a hospital to get the respirator to crap out. 

But what is scarier to me is the reaction people will have when....err...if the lights go out.

From another forum, I am hearing rumblings that this Apocalypse Man show was actually a pilot.  IIRC, there were two other "episodes" already filmed.

But because the internet feedback was so negative about this "pilot" , the other two shows aren't going to be aired.

WOW!  I reckoned there was some hate for this show, but NOT that much hate.

Loved the show... that being said, I work at a hospital and it would take three hours to turn off all the breakers in the hospital, if you could find hem all... And two gallons of diesel will run our diesel generator for about 10 minutes. 16 cylinders and 38 liters displacement. If you do find yourself in like situation you can easily determine the outlets powered by the emergency generators because they are red. Our security cameras aren't on emergency power either...LOL More important to keep power to heart monitors and ventilators. Also a nice additional thing to know is all hospitals have shortwave radios and they ARE generator powered.
Agree on the hoodies thing. Not on the black color. In low light people see contrast best. Stick with neutral colors. Rather than bike pump raid a Marina and get a manual bilge pump. Water from hot water tanks was brilliant.
