In fact, I would Prefer to see fines or other CRIMINAL penalties for appearing in public without arms. It would not REQUIRE open carry, but if a cop asks you if you are carrying, you better be able to produce.

Don't believe "factcheck" I have seen them print inaccuracies as gospel and a couple of outright lies about Obama. I forget the specific Items but there were a couple things they claimed he never said that are on video at YOUTUBE.

I first heard the "blade of grass" quote as part of an article describing the meeting of  US and Japanese WWII vets some time after the war.

When the US vets asked why the Japanese, knowing our naval forces in the Pacific were crippled that our military was not at all prepared to defend the country, the Japanese answered something like     We were aware that, in your country, you actually had civilians competing in shooting matches using military rifles and that civilian ownership of firearms was high.  We would find a rifle behind every blade of grass.  We knew not to step into that quicksand.

So, yes, it was the presence of arms in civilian hands AND the fact that we had a strong Civilian Marksmanship Program at that time that caused the Japanese to forgo invasion of the US even though our Military forces were in disarray.

So, when the CMP CZAR is appointed, be sure to put in some mandatory hours in Grade School, Junior High and High School on the safe handling, cleaning and maintenance, and marksmanship of the standard issue military weapons of the day.  I doubt every student will have the calling to be a Warrior, but they will have a jump start on what it takes to be a soldier.

 I think that NUMBERS had a really big part to play in the Japanese decision as well, ( this is just thinking off the top of my head, not based on any documentation )  The primary objective of the Japanese was to acquire natural resources, they may have beaten the Russians in 1905 but they were still a small country with a limited pool of manpower. This manpower was already committed in China and south Asia which gave them access to  all the resources they  they needed. It did not make strategic sense for them to spread themselves even thinner by attempting to invade a far more advanced nation where they would be HUGELY out numbered and gain nothing that they could not get in the area they already controlled.
Even the Aleutian landings were never pressed and were never intended to be anything more than a diversion from the Midway campaign.
On the logistical side of the equation the tonnages and distances involved when compared to shipping available also made such a project impossible and also applies to the idea of an invasion by modern China.
We had enough trouble with the short distances in the English Channel involved at Normandy, to launch a similar or larger effort across 3,000 miles of open ocean is just not feasible .

Well said. 2,000+ miles coast to coast (depending on how you measure) and 300 million people with (not enough, but a lot) of fire arms and at the wrong end of a very long logistics train. Not going to happen. Red Dawn was a great movie, but don't expect it in real life. Its the damn zombies we need to worry about. ;D

Well said. 2,000+ miles coast to coast (depending on how you measure) and 300 million people with (not enough, but a lot) of fire arms and at the wrong end of a very long logistics train. Not going to happen. Red Dawn was a great movie, but don't expect it in real life. Its the damn zombies liberals we need to worry about. ;D
