As all the unfolding of "little insignificant" things the Ft. Hood shooter did, all the "little insignificant" things the 9/11 highjackers did, you know taking flying lessons, and not really concerned with landing protocols, ya know little things,...expired visa's,,,, Richard Reid the ass kicked shoe bomber, etc,....

Any reasonable intelligence agency is SUPPOSED to take these "little insignificant" things, and put it into a larger perspective like a physics or high math equation... I have "a" and "b", but need to solve for "c" "d" and "e", how do you do that?

In a truly "global" war on these "virgin seekers" I'm sure fried weenie boy had just as many "little insignificant" things 3 months before he boarded the plane that could be useful.

After all, why else would they be named an "intelligence" agency?

If your intelligence agency is GOOD, they can deceive YOU, If it's bad they deceive themselves.

Seems the consequences of a "dropped" bit of intelligence or what in hindsight would be "red flags" is than relied upon by citizens who take it upon themselves.

Flight 93, the passengers that stopped the shoe bomber, and the passenger(s) that stopped fried weenie boy...

The terrorists know "box cutters" won;t work anymore, so they get more creative.  Hopefully, our Homeland Security and other agencies can catch the hell up.

I doubt it, ....but there have been arrests and intercepts made both here and abroad.... It's certainly tough.

FQ, I don't know if you have considered this angle.
The "shoe Bomber" and this Character in the PETN Pamper, WERE successful.
Granted, they did not kill any "Infidels", but they DID gain attention, keep people worrying about their safety, and inconvenience the Airlines and security Agencies of several countries, from AQ's perspective that counts as a win for them.

terrorists want to cuase fear.   I know they have the money and enough smart people working for them that they could shut the US down if they wanted too.  they don't for 2 reasons.

1 it would not help them get what they want, what ever demands that actually is.( remember they want fear, that is thier weapon)

2 they know it would bring so much heat on them, they would either be dead, or shut down.

Trust me, we are doing very little to fight the war on terror compared to what we could do if we had full backing of the US population and the rest of the world.
