Here in S. Fl, we get the errant car in the canal story all the time, at least once or twice a month, some make it, some don't. Panic sets in, and most folks get disoriented, and drown.

Tragically, there was a mother of two, texting while driving in the rain, ran off the road, overcorrected, and slid sideways rolled over into a shallow canal.

Witnesses jumped in and managed to free the driver but her two children drowned, all in less than 3 minutes.

Thomas Jefferson: The strongest reason for the people to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against the tyranny of government. That is why our masters in Washington are so anxious to disarm us. They are not afraid of criminals. They are afraid of a populace which cannot be subdued by tyrants."
Col. Jeff Cooper.

They just did a news report with film coverage of the accident and it looks like the vehicle landed on it's roof and was quite heavily damaged.

It's not like he just drove into a canal, more like it rolled and landed upside down in the 6 feet of water.

The driver was a security guard driving home from work.

I don't think he would have been able to open the doors as the roof was crushed.

Back in the early '80s I lived in Miami Lakes.  Seemed like even back then once or twice a month we'd hear about somebody's car upside down in a canal.  And that was before cell phones and texting.  Back then, they had to rely on dropping cigarettes or too much booze for the distraction.  Anyway, Darwin frequently wins...
“I’ve lived the literal meaning of the ‘land of the free’ and ‘home of the brave.’ It’s not corny for me. I feel it in my heart. I feel it in my chest. Even at a ball game, when someone talks during the anthem or doesn’t take off his hat, it pisses me off. I’m not one to be quiet about it, either.”  Chris Kyle

Update: accident caused by... wait for it... wait...

Quote
ROSEVILLE, Calif. – A driver whose SUV plunged into a Northern California creek after he was startled by his hands-free cell phone device escaped the sinking vehicle by blasting out the window with a handgun. The 28-year-old man, whose name wasn't immediately available, is an armed security guard at Thunder Valley Casino, north of Sacramento. He sustained minor injuries in Sunday's accident.

A spokesman for the Roseville Fire Department said the man was traveling northbound on Industrial Avenue in Roseville when the cell phone device activated. The driver was startled and veered off the road through the guardrail. The SUV landed in Pleasant Grove Creek.

He used his gun to shoot himself out, then flagged down a passerby.

Why am I not shocked?

Anti: I think some of you gentleman would choose to apply a gun shaped remedy to any problem or potential problem that presented itself? Your reverance (sic) for firearms is maintained with an almost religious zeal. The mind boggles! it really does...

Me: Naw, we just apply a gun-shaped remedy to those extreme life threatening situations that call for it. All the less urgent problems we're willing to discuss.
