Bringing home a retired veteran
« on: January 29, 2010, 02:10:38 PM »
So I go into my firearms supplier today to look at how best to waste my government subsidized money (ie Tax Return) and stumbled across a wonderful find. An H&K USP 9mm that they got as a preowned Police duty pistol. Nice condition with the exception that the police armorer etched in the inventory number on the left of the slide along with the department ID which turned out to be Washington DC Metro Police. So I had them put it away till I can pick it up next week. I even managed to get a few magazines thrown in for a little extra. Gun has night sights and the DA/SA with safety/decocker. Still has wonderful finish and the nicest DA trigger pull I've seen. Priced at $550 it seemed like an excellent deal. He's going to a trade show this weekend and is going to find my M&P9C with night sights as well. So next week I will be coming home with a new H&K (never thought I'd buy one) and a S&W M&P9c and either an Israeli made Galil or a cheap AK. For those of you with the knowledge should I bring home the Galil or the AK? Like the sights on the Galil but the AK has the ease of finding parts and mags. But the Galil is 5.56 and I have no trouble finding ammo. It keeps with my philosophy of few calibers means more ammo for the gun. Any thoughts? So I'm bringing home a DC war vet but still stuck on the AK/Galil. Thoughts?

Congrats......and the good (and sad in a way) thing about it being a 'used cop' gun is it most likely has a very low round count through it. I'd be interested on hearing the initial inspection details (and range report) after you get it.

As you say, parts, accessories and info on AK's is far easier to find, and the Russian ammo that it was built for, like Wolf is plentiful enough, and somewhat less expensive than 223
Although the Galil DOES have a certain "Cool factor" compared to the rest of the AK family and may even use AR mags, (I'm not sure about that but the Israeli's had a lot of M 16's when they made the 5.56 Galils ) .

Remember the LAST war in Afghanistan ? 5.45 was what the LOSERS used, of course they are giving it away.

It is kind of sad so see the "mightiest military in the east" beat by a bunch of cave dwellers using 8mm Mausers and enfields up against the almighty AK-47 and AK-74... So sad. Says something for accuracy Mauser/Enfield. But looking at the data on the Galil it's the AK operating system combined with the trigger mechanism from a Garand/M14 with the sights of an AR. Can't say they missed a thing!

Actually after Charlie Wilson got things rolling we spent hundreds of thousands of dollars supplying the Muj with Chinese AK 47's RPG's and millions of rounds of ammo which is now being returned one burst at a time.
Odd part is that as the Muj were switching from Enfields to AK 47's and turning the tide the Soviets were switching from 47's to 74's and getting the the nasty end of it.

What happened in Vietnam, and why are we still using the .223?  From what I understand the 5.45mm is standard issue for Russian military.

What happened in Vietnam, politicians tried to play 'War'. Bean counters and politicians tried to dictate to the military how to build a combat rifle and how to fight a war. All the while sitting in cozy offices thousands of miles away from the fighting. The 5.56 is a wonderful round for what it was designed to do. Engage targets at medium range. .308 was made to punch through and kill at long range. Just in passing talking with buddies in Iraq there they have a lot of good to say about the M4/5.56. Sure it has limitations just like ALL OTHER RIFLES but when implemented correctly in close in fighting or building to building operations it is extremely reliable. I laugh when he tells me that his buddies grip about jams till they get new mags then they shut up. I sent him 10 PMAGS back in November. And not a single malfunction since. In fact right now he jokes that when other guys in his squad have malfunctions they go to him for ammo. Sucks to be him.

BTTT  >:(

Go with the AK, and not just for the add-on trinkets. I have seen enough Galils just mangle the hell out of the brass. They eject so hard that (a) they throw the brass 50-75 feet so even just finding it is a thrill in and of itself, and (b) before they do, the violence of the ejection mashes the side against the bolt charging handle leaving a huge dent in the side, so the brass is not reloadable. Brass is expensive now, and may become scarce. Do your part for brass preservation for all of us - go AK.

BTW, in buying the USP, H&K called - they hate you and think you suck!   ;D
